SUMMARY:First Sundays: 'Twas the Night Before Pride' with Author Joanna McClintick
DESCRIPTION:A glittering celebration of queer families puts Pride gently in perspective—honoring those in the LGBTQ+ community who fought against injustice and inequality. \nAuthor Joanna McClintick joins us to share her illustrated poem ‘Twas the Night Before Pride\, that tells\, beyond the glitter and rainbows of PRIDE\, “the beautiful resistance that made PRIDE come to be.” \nThis joyful picture-book homage to a day of community and inclusion—and to the joys of anticipation—is also a comprehensive history. With bright\, buoyant illustrations and lyrical\, age-appropriate rhyme modeled on “’Twas the Night Before Christmas\,” it tackles difficult content such as the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS marches. On the night before Pride\, families everywhere are preparing to partake. As one family packs snacks and makes signs\, an older sibling shares the importance of the march with the newest member of the family. Reflecting on the day\, the siblings agree that the best thing about Pride is getting to be yourself. Debut author Joanna McClintick and Pura Belpré Award–winning author-illustrator Juana Medina create a new classic that pays homage to the beauty of families of all compositions—and of all-inclusive love. \nPraise for ‘Twas the Night Before Pride: \n“Rainbows abound in Medina’s full-color digital illustrations\, which incorporate historical references and depict a wonderfully diverse cast. . . While there is no shortage of picture books about Pride\, this one may be the most inclusive and expansive yet. . . . An affirming and kid-friendly history lesson.”\n—Kirkus Reviews \n“McClintick presents a loving survey of the queer community in all its diversity. . . Medina’s rainbow-flecked digital illustrations do a superb job of capturing the spirit and scope of Pride and the excitement it generates\, while the sprightly text joins in the celebration. With affirming discussions of togetherness and LGBTQ+ rights\, the book’s final takeaway that “being yourself is a blast” hits just the right note.”\n—Booklist \nNewcomers are always welcome! To join us in person or to receive the Zoom webinar link\, please RSVP to Youth Programs Director Audrey Kindred at youngethicalexplorers@gmail.com. For more information about our youth and family programming\, please visit www.ethical.nyc/youth. \n \n\nYoung Ethical Explorers is our Humanist Sunday school\, designed for youngsters from ages 4 to 13\, and takes place concurrent with our Sunday Platform meetings. SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series with Leader Joe Chuman: ‘Power Hungry: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement’ with Suzanne Cope (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Our friends at the Puffin Cultural Forum have announced the Puffin Interview Series with our own Leader Dr. Joe Chuman! On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format\, all streamed live on Youtube. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. \nThis month: Dr. Suzanne Cope \nPOWER HUNGRY: Women of the Black Panther Party and Freedom Summer and Their Fight to Feed a Movement is the true story of two unsung women who used food as a weapon for social and political change in the Black Freedom Movement: Cleo Silvers\, a Black Panther in New York City whose work focused on child hunger and inner city health care\, and Aylene Quin\, a tavern owner and bootlegger in McComb\, MS\, whose passion was voting rights. Both were attacked by government forces. These parallel stories\, separated by a few years and a few thousand miles\, intersect in surprising ways and provide a model for activists today. Buy POWER HUNGRY here. \nSuzanne Cope\, PhD is a narrative journalist and food studies scholar with a focus on food as a tool for social and political change. In addition to her upcoming book POWER HUNGRY and SMALL BATCH (2014)\, she has written about food and culture for the New York Times\, The Atlantic\, CNN\, BBC\, among others. She also actively publishes and presents in academic forums and teaches writing and about food and politics at New York University. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband\, the musician Steve Mayone\, and her two children.  \nFor information about in-person attendance please visit the Puffin Cultural Forum’s website. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nJoe Chuman recently retired as the Leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County\, a community he served beginning in 1974. Since 2008\, he has been a part-time Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. He currently teaches on human rights at Columbia University and Hunter College\, and has taught at the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, and many other periodicals. Joe currently serves as president of the Bergen County Sanctuary for Asylum Seekers\, founded by the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County. \nWatch Live Here!

SUMMARY:Ethical Adventures Easy Walkers: RFK Bridge
DESCRIPTION:The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge (aka the Triboro) is actually a complex of bridges and elevated expressway viaducts linking Manhattan\, the Bronx\, and Queens. On the Manhattan side\, it begins with the bridge over the Harlem River to Randalls Island\, continues with the bridge over Bronx Kill\, and then the bridge over Hell Gate to Astoria\, Queens. \nVeteran Easy Walkers may recall that our first attempt at crossing the RFK Bridge was cut short by a police closure of the most spectacular section\, the Hell Gate suspension bridge. Disappointed\, we promised ourselves we’d reschedule it. The time has come! \nDetails: Meeting at Ethical\, corner of W. 64 and CPW at 9:30\, we’ll take the #1 train at W. 66th and Broadway to 103rd Street\, where we’ll transfer to the M60 and take that to 125th and Second Avenue\, the Manhattan side of the bridge. When we reach Astoria\, we’ll lunch at the Neptune Diner\, probably the most famous diner in New York. We’ll return home via the M60 and #1. (The N train is also nearby in Astoria.) Rain date: Wednesday\, June 8. \n(Image by Rublov – Own work\, CC BY-SA 4.0\, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=115653571)

SUMMARY:Watch Party: January 6 Select Committee Hearings
DESCRIPTION:Watch history in the making with the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Ethical Action committee and the Upper West Side MoveOn/Indivisible Action Group together on a big screen in historic Adler Hall. Norman Siegel\, former Executive Director of New York Civil Liberties Union and champion for civil rights\, will lead off the evening. \nTrump Republicans are pursuing a continuous mission to disrupt American decisions and assault our freedom to vote. They engaged in a criminal conspiracy that nearly overturned the 2020 political race and prompted the violent assault on our country on January 6th. \nAmericans have to make sure these hearings break through the busy news cycle and reach the general public. We cannot allow Trump and his allies to successfully cover up one of the worst ever attacks against our American freedoms and democracy! \nBy meeting up for watch events\, we can construct public awareness around the hearings and momentum for action both locally and nationally to prevent another January 6th attack and realize the promise of democracy for all of us––no matter our color\, zip code\, or income that you can’t make it. \nWe will hold watch events nationwide so we can bring together people committed to protecting our democracy to discuss our plan to hold those responsible to account. \nClick here to RSVP with UWS MoveOn-Indivisible Action Group (Required) \nAccessibility \nThis event meets ADA standards: \n\nAccessible restrooms\nCOVID-19 safety protocols\nWheelchair ramp\nLive captioning\n\nCOVID-19 Notice: Proof of COVID-19 vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required to attend.

SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater: Gently Down the Stream by Martin Sherman
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and discussion series returns in-person with Gently Down the Stream by Martin Sherman. \nBeau and Rufus come from very different places\, geographically — New Orleans vs. London — and psychologically: the 60-something Beau grew up when being gay was a dangerous secret; Rufus\, 33 years younger\, embraces his identity openly. But opposites\, as they say\, attract. \nThrough poignant and sharply funny vignettes\, the play traces their relationship as it blossoms into love and\, perhaps more important\, a fast friendship. \nAfter the play\, Leader Nori Rost will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner. \nMatinee encore on Sunday\, June 12\, 2:00-4:00pm. \nMembers $5\, Guests $10 (at door)
