SUMMARY:Bill McKibben: The Crucial Decades (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:FREE in-person and online! RSVP required for in-person. Ticketed lunch follows ($15) \nWe have a short time to make the changes scientists demand–and those of us who are a little nearer to the exit than the entrance may be some of the key people to make that happen. I’ll describe why our generations may make the crucial difference–if we get our (Third) Act together. \nFeaturing a live performance by the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus! \nBill’s talk will also be followed by a catered lunch ($15) \nClick here to RSVP to attend Bill’s talk in-person (free) and purchase lunch tickets ($15)! \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nBill McKibben is a contributing writer to The New Yorker\, and a founder of Third Act\, which organizes people over the age of 60 to work on climate and racial justice. He founded the first global grassroots climate campaign\, 350.org\, and serves as the Schumann Distinguished Professor in Residence at Middlebury College in Vermont. In 2014 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize\, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel\,’ in the Swedish Parliament. He’s also won the Gandhi Peace Award\, and honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He has written over a dozen books about the environment\, including his first\, The End of Nature\, published in 1989\, and the forthcoming The Flag\, the Cross\, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at his Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened. \nFounded by Pete Seeger\, Walkabout Clearwater is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and social action through song and education. We are a NY not-for-profit organization of volunteers under the name Walkabout Clearwater Sloop Inc. and a chartered member-club of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater\, and our activities support the work of our parent organization. \nThe Walkabout Clearwater Chorus is more than a singing group. We perform at various venues\, including our own Coffeehouse\, rallies and marches. We bring folk music to the younger generations with our school programs. We are first and foremost activists – using our voices to address the issues of today\, uniting song with purpose. \nPresider: Monica Weiss \nMonthly Collection: Destination Tomorrow \n(Photo © Nancie Battaglia) \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Ethics and the Theater Encore: Gently Down the Stream by Martin Sherman
DESCRIPTION:Our long-running staged reading and discussion series returns in-person with Gently Down the Stream by Martin Sherman. \nBeau and Rufus come from very different places\, geographically — New Orleans vs. London — and psychologically: the 60-something Beau grew up when being gay was a dangerous secret; Rufus\, 33 years younger\, embraces his identity openly. But opposites\, as they say\, attract. \nThrough poignant and sharply funny vignettes\, the play traces their relationship as it blossoms into love and\, perhaps more important\, a fast friendship. \nAfter the play\, Leader Nori Rost will moderate an open discussion about the ethical issues raised and explored in the work. Produced by Patricia Bruder Debrovner. \nPremiere on Friday\, June 1o\, 7:00-9:00pm. \nMembers $5\, Guests $10 (at door)

SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion – Elena Ferrante: My Brilliant Friend (Online)
DESCRIPTION:My Brilliant Friend is the first of a hugely popular four book series known as the Neapolitan Novels by the Italian Elena Ferrante. \nIt is a rich\, intense and generous hearted story about two friends. Ferrante’s style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship. \n*** \nLiterary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.
