SUMMARY:Stephanie McGraw: From Dirt to Destiny
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online! \nFrom Dirt to Destiny is about my struggles as a woman of color growing up in poverty\, growing up in lack with poor education\, no sense of direction\, no goals\, my failures and my successes. \nWhat my journey has proven to show me is it doesn’t matter how far down you go\, there is always a light or something bright that can guide us out\, and that light found me and guided me out. \nThis week also features a performance by special musical guest Keith Anthony Fluitt! \nStephanie McGraw grew up in New York City Housing Authority projects and experienced abuse as a child and intimate partner violence as an adult. Surviving 30 years of abusive relationships and a resulting stay in a domestic violence shelter\, there came a time in her life where there was a growing\, burning desire to help victims journey from devastation to safety and independence. \nLeaving the domestic violence shelter and growing out of her pain\, Stephanie returned to her Harlem roots\, where there was no one talking about real life issues related to domestic violence. As a result\, she gave birth to WARM – We All Really Matter (a 501c non-profit organization) in 2010 to increase community awareness about domestic violence\, and to empower victims to help themselves. \nWhile what Stephanie does radiates from an internal fire rather than external recognition\, she is grateful and further strengthened by the multiple recognitions about her work from NYC elected officials\, community organizations\, NYPD\, newspapers\, TV stations\, and hospitals; as well as from the New York State Senate and the United Nations. \nAbout Keith Anthony Fluitt \nKeith Anthony Fluitt\, a New York City born and rasied singer\, has worked with many great artists of our time including Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson. Keith also sings lead vocals. \nHe went to Alvin Aliey Dance Shool\, graduated from talent unlimited program at Julia Richmond High School (graduating with: Lisa Lisa\, Gene Anthony Ray from Fame\, Brenda K. Starr\, and a host of others). Keith has performed with many great stars including but not limited to: Patti LaBelle\, Martha Wash\, Will Downing\, Ashford & Simpson\, Lala Brooks\, Quincy Jones\, amd Michael Jackson. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Doña Bárbara\, a mysteriously and powerfully beautiful woman\, is consumed with hatred for all men. When her cousin Santos Luzardo\, bred on the plains but educated in the city\, returns to reclaim his land and cattle\, their battle becomes one of violence\, magic\, and seduction. Rómulo Gallegos’s vivid prose brings the world of Doña Bárbara to life\, and blends fantasy\, adventure\, and romance. \nPublished in 1929 and all but forgotten by anglophone readers\, Doña Bárbara is one of the first examples of magical realism\, laying the groundwork for later authors such as Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.
