SUMMARY:Exploring Ethical Dilemmas: ‘Star Trek’ with James Frey Croft (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Star Trek\, one of the world’s most successful and beloved television series is also uniquely concerned with ethics. Many of its episodes directly address questions of right and wrong\, exploring ethical questions in a science fiction setting. \nIn this presentation\, James Croft\, Ed.D.\, Senior Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis\, will share clips from the series and explore how the show examines questions of ethics and inspires us to be better human beings. Live long and prosper! \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 838 1778 1084 | Passcode 675527\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout James \nJames Croft is the Senior Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis\, one of the largest Humanist congregations in the world. As clergy for one of the few thriving congregations for people without a traditional faith\, James tells stories and designs aesthetic experiences to invite people into the work of social change. \nJames is a specialist in interdisciplinary research into the arts. He completed his Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the Harvard Graduate School of Education\, where he focused on the intersection of the arts and learning. He is the winner of many awards for his academic work\, including a prestigious Frank Knox Fellowship\, awarded to those who demonstrate “leadership\, strength of character\, keen mind\, balanced judgement and a devotion to the democratic ideal.” \nJames is a gay rights and Humanist activist. His first speech as an activist\, “6.12 seconds“\, has been used around the world to train leaders in the art of Public Narrative (the use of personal stories to move people to action)\, and is literally a textbook example of the effective use of narrative to make change. In addition to his work as Humanist clergy\, James provides coaching for those who wish to communicate more persuasively. \nA native of London\, England\, James lives in St. Louis\, MO with his husband Kolten and their darling chihuahua Ella. \n  \n  \n\nWhat does one do when there’s no clearly defined ethical road to take? Exploring Ethical Dilemmas features speakers from a variety of backgrounds — medicine\, law\, business\, science\, education\, the arts\, social work\, etc. — who share their experience and knowledge of ethical issues in those fields.

SUMMARY:Coming of Age Program Info Session (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, the Society will be restarting our Coming of Age youth program\, geared toward children (roughly) ages 11-15. Families of all faiths and belief systems are welcome to join our community grounded in ethical learning. \nFor those who are interested in the programs\, Youth Programs Director Audrey Kindred will be hosting an online ‘open house’/info session on Tuesday\, September 20 at 7pm. To RSVP\, or for questions\, please contact Audrey at youngethicalexplorers@gmail.com. \nA collaborative planning session will also be held on Sunday\, September 25 from 1:30-3:30pm. For more information about our Youth and Family programming\, please visit ethical.nyc/youth. \nAbout our Coming of Age Program \n“Coming-of-age” marks a young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. Families are invited to enroll their older teens in our coming-of-age program\, whose guiding principle is to provide a safe and creative environment\, and ethical grounding\, to empower every young adult to blossom within our community. The age at which this transition takes place varies in society\, as does the nature of the transition. It can be a simple legal convention or part of a ritual as practiced in many societies and religions. \nIn our diverse community\, we welcome young people who are seeking an opportunity to mark their life path with a process and celebration focused on \n\nSelf-inquiry\nWorld awareness\nPersonal and social responsibility\nCommunity service\n\nRecognizing that children mature at different rates\, we meet with children and parents to determine when a child is ready\, and the curriculum is geared to the needs of the individual and family. With a Humanist anchor\, we will explore a world of ideas and values together. \nTK

SUMMARY:Leader’s Roundtable: Are Forgiveness and Atonement Healthy? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. \nIn a few days\, our Jewish friends will celebrate Yom Kippur. I thought this was a fitting time to talk about forgiveness. Both the willingness to ask forgiveness when we offend someone and the willingness to forgive others who have offended us. Is it healthy? What are the benefits? Why can it be so hard for people (even Ethical people!) to acknowledge when they’ve done harm and seek forgiveness. Why can it be so hard for people (even Ethical people!) to forgive someone—whether or not they have apologized? \nhttps://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/forgiveness/art-20047692 \nA Quick Guide to Forgiveness \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 861 1417 5760 | Passcode 347145 \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person. All others are invited to join us via Zoom. We hope to open up to the public again as soon as possible. \n\nYou can download Zoom at https://zoom.us/download\, although it’s not necessary to do ahead of time. SUMMARY:Share and Learn: Arts Hobbies and Handiwork: "The Maine Art Collective: Four Artists in Maine Making Art and Doing 'Wicked' Good"
DESCRIPTION:The goal of Maine Art Collective is to create opportunities and visibility for talented local Maine artists. Art doesn’t have to be only for the affluent\, it should be accessible for all populations to enjoy. MAC is run by artists\, for the benefit of artists and members keep the majority of the profits. This allows for the artists to sell their work at more reasonable prices\, making artwork more accessible to broader populations. \nSue Vittner will begin by describing the origins of the Maine Art Collective (MAC). She can speak to the origin and mission of MAC. How was the idea formed? What was the original vision\, and how does that compare to what exists now? How was that vision developed and actualized? Who was recruited to the effort? How does MAC support artists? How does the MAC model differ from most galleries? and why? What is MAC’s community housing initiative? What does the future hold for MAC? \nAmy Kelly\, a member of MAC from the outset\, will review her initial involvement and what drew her to participate in MAC’s formation. How did the MAC model align with her painting process and values as an artist? How has her connection to Maine\, lobstering and the sea\, influenced her art? How did she develop the skills to produce her striking representations of that connection? \nFaith Garnett\, the gleaming star of this Zoom group\, will review how she became interested in card making\, how she has developed her skills in designing and producing hand-crafted one-of-kind cards for all occasions\, including the founding of her on-line webstore for those designs\, Lindennotes.com. She will review her process of creation and display some of her work. In addition she can describe her involvement with Cards for Kindness. \nMichael Garnett will describe how He came to be interested in papercutting\, and provide a slideshow of the the making of one particular papercut from start to finish\, a view of Bug Light in South Portland. \nClick to join at start | Zoom ID 884 1105 5819 | Passcode 140176\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above.
