SUMMARY:Sunday Platform - Nori Rost: The Sky is Falling
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nThis month marks the 10th anniversary of the horrific mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown\, CT. During that rampage the 20 year old gunman shot and killed 26 people\, including 20 children between 6-7 years old. In June\, 2015\, Daily Mail journalist\, Dan Hodges\, tweeted\, “In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US Gun Control Debate. Once  America decided killing children was bearable\, it was over.” As we mark this somber occasion\, it appears his comments are true. But we cannot let this conversation be over. Dr. Rost will explores what does our Ethical Culture commitment call us to do to end gun violence in our communities? How can we ensure we’ve done all we can to keep our families safe while honoring the second amendment of our Constitution? \n“I believe that the tragedy started with an angry thought in Adam Lanza’s head. And an angry thought can be changed. So\, I asked everyone to start changing one angry thought into a loving thought every day. I said\, ‘By doing that\, you will positively impact yourself\, those around you and through the ripple effect\, you will make this a more peaceful and loving world.” -Scarlett Lewis\, mother of 6 year old Sandy Hook victim\, Jesse \nAbout Leader Dr. Nori Rost \nDr. Nori Rost is the acting Leader of the New York Society for Ethical Culture. SUMMARY:Great Literature Discussion: The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin
DESCRIPTION:Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used. Read the work in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans. 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. \nWhat if there were no gender – if humans only took on male or female characteristics when they went into heat once a month\, and sex was kept separate from everything else? What would a society without the dualism of male and female look like? \nThis tale of an icebound planet abounds with Le Guin’s chilling descriptions of whirling snow and bitter cold. \nFor access information\, please contact Gunther.
