SUMMARY:Nori Rost: We're a Happy Family
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWe’re a Happy Family! Many of us will remember this as part of a song Barney\, the purple dinosaur\, sings on all the Barney shows. The whole verse is: I love you\, you love me; we’re a happy family. With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you\, won’t you say you love me\, too. Don’t worry\, that’s all the Barney quotes! In this Platform talk\, Dr. Rost will talk about the many ways we create family\, including right here at Ethical Culture! Join us as we explore how Ethical Culture can be part of our chosen family and how we can invite others to join us. \nYou know\, the thing about family is that you can choose it. And I choose you. ― Brynne Rebele-Henry \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nPresider: TBA \nMonthly Collection: TBA \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Puffin Interview Series w/ Joe Chuman: 'Keep 'Em in the East' with Richard Koszarski (Online)
DESCRIPTION:This event is being hosted by the Puffin Cultural Forum. For details and to RSVP\, please visit their website. Livestream information is below \nCost: $10 Suggested Donation (In-Person)\nLocation: Online and at 20 Puffin Way\, Teaneck\, NJ\nTickets and Reservations \nIn his book Keep ’Em in the East: Kazan\, Kubrick\, and the Postwar New York Film Renaissance\, Richard Koszarski chronicles the compelling and often surprising origins\, looking beyond such classics as Naked City\, Kiss of Death\, and Portrait of Jennie. He examines the social\, cultural\, and economic forces that shaped New York filmmaking\, from city politics to union regulations\, and shows how decades of low-budget independent production taught local filmmakers how to capture the city’s grit\, liveliness\, and allure. He reveals the importance of “race films”—all-Black productions intended for segregated African American audiences—that not only helped keep the film business afloat but also nurtured a core group of writers\, directors\, designers\, and technicians. Detailed production histories of On the Waterfront and Killer’s Kiss—films that appear here in a completely new light—illustrate the distinctive characteristics of New York cinema. \nRichard Koszarski is professor emeritus of English and Cinema Studies at Rutgers University. He was formerly a curator at the Museum of the Moving Image and is the founder and editor emeritus of Film History. His many books include Hollywood on the Hudson: Film and Television in New York from Griffith to Sarnoff (2008). \n$10 Suggested Donation (In-Person)\nReservations recommended- tix@puffinfoundation.org \nWatch Online Here! \n \n\nAbout the Interview Series & Dr. Chuman \nThe Puffin Cultural Forum is proud to present our “Puffin Interview Series with Dr. Joe Chuman.” On the first Sunday of every month Dr. Chuman will delve into and explore the work of renowned authors through meaningful dialogue in an intimate interview format. There will be an opportunity for audiences to ask their own questions during a Q&A session. Dr. Chuman recently retired from his post as the leader of the Ethical Culture Society of Bergen County after forty-six years. He has taught at Columbia University\, Hunter College\, and the United Nations University for Peace in Costa Rica. His works have been published in the New York Times\, The Humanist\, Free Inquiry\, Humanistic Judaism\, The Hill and many other periodicals.

SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: How Do You Solve a Problem Like George Santos? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. This week: \nThe stories keep getting worse and worse. From lying about having Jewish grandparents who escaped the Holocaust\, to where he worked\, went to school\, and more\, now reports are surfacing that Santos ran a fraudulent GoFundMe account that was supposed to pay for surgery for the dying dog of a veteran. And more. While state Repubiclans are demanding he resign\, Kevin McCarthy and others in Congress are silent on the matter. Should Santos be forced to resign? Perhaps more importantly\, should people seeking public office at the highest levels have to undergo background checks to verify the veracity of their claims?   \nMore Republicans call for George Santos to resign over fictional résumé | Republicans | The Guardian \nWill George Santos resign? Four scenarios on how this bizarre political situation could end. – Vox \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person. All others are invited to join us via Zoom. We hope to open up to the public again as soon as possible. \nClick to join at start time | Zoom ID 861 1417 5760 | Passcode 347145
