SUMMARY:Janet Rose: Won't You Be My Neighbor? The Ethical NYC Social Service Board's Good Neighbor Initiative
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online — Learn how you too can be a Good Neighbor! \nFred Rogers had it right when he sang that last line of his Mister Roger’s Neighborhood song\, asking his viewers to extend a hand to one another as neighbors. \nThe Social Service Board of the New York Society for Ethical Culture is proud to introduce our Good Neighbors Initiative\, partnering with Residents Associations to bring programs and services to our neighbors in NYCHA’s Amsterdam Houses\, Amsterdam Extension\, and Harborview Terrace. Our goal is to help our neighbors and fulfill our longstanding mission to “build listening relationships to develop responsive programs that alleviate the symptoms of systemic injustice to promote a more compassionate city.” \nThis Sunday Platform will share the high points of the Ethical Society’s 140-plus years of social service since our founding by Dr. Felix Adler\, an inheritance of ethical action we aim to carry forward. We’ll also detail how you can become a good neighbor yourself by getting involved with the Social Service Board’s Good Neighbors Initiative\, My Own Book Fund\, and Women’s Shelter. \nCome discover the highlights of the Social Service Board’s 2022 programs and learn how you can volunteer or support our initiatives throughout 2023. \nJanet Rose\, Chair of the Social Service Board\, has been a member of the New York Society for Ethical Culture for over five years.  She was instrumental in the phenomenal success of the Reclaim Our Vote Campaigns\, which addressed voter suppression in high suppression states.  Additionally\, Janet and her husband Howard Rose created the Food Insecurity Initiative\, which has collected and distributed almost 20 tons of food to the food insecure for the past 3 years. \nNotice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination\, photo ID\, and mask are required. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection: Venezuelans and Immigrants Aid \n\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Leader’s Lunchtime Roundtable: Fine Art or Looted Treasure? (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your lunch and join Leader Dr. Nori Rost and members for an engaging round-table discussion on the issues of the day and recommended readings. This week: \nWho has valid claim to  the Parthenon statues and marble taken in the early 1800s by a British nobleman? Un recent years many museums have been returning artifacts from nations gained either through plunder or with “permission” from the native land.  Should this become the standard? Is it ever ok for a nation or museum to keep artifacts from another culture? \nhttps://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/17/arts/design/parthenon-sculptures-elgin-marbles-negotiations.html \nCOVID-19 NOTICE: Only fully-vaccinated Society members are invited to attend in-person.
