SUMMARY:Joe Chuman: How Did We Get Here and What Is to Be Done?
DESCRIPTION:In-person and online! \nWith the last election\, we pulled back from the brink of losing our democracy. But deed-rooted problems continue to plague American society – social divisions\, tribalism\, irrationality\, the spurning of expertise\, and escalating violence. \nHow did society reach this point and how\, as Ethical Culturists\, do we need to direct ourselves? \nMy talk will be a look at changes in the social landscape that began in the 1960s\, that helped bring us to this point. I will also look at the need to retain our values and\, steps that need to be taken to restore normalcy and security to American society. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. Currently\, he writes articles on political and socio-political issues on Substack and other social media outlets. \nWatch Online: Click to join at start | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nCOVID-19 Notice: Vaccination is required for in-person attendance. SUMMARY:Ethics Unplugged: The Shadow of the Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:This month marks 3 years since The Great Shut Down when all of us were instructed to stay home to “flatten the curve.” What we thought would be a few weeks at most turned in a pandemic that remains with us\, still. How has the shadow of the pandemic changed your life and perspectives? What silver linings have you found? What would Felix Adler—who lived through the “Spanish” Flu—have done? \nMarch Theme: Me and My Shadow \nEthical Culture founder\, philosopher Felix Adler\, discusses the three spiritual pains of isolation\, meaninglessness\, powerlessness. Over and against this are things he names as shadows such as selfishness\, narrowness\, ignorance. This month we examine how these show up in our lives personally and globally today. \nIn-person and online! Join Society Leaders Nori Rost and Jé Hooper for Ethics Unplugged\, an exciting reimaging of Ethical Culture\, every Wednesday at 7:00pm. Refreshments will be served! \nWatch Online!
