Followed by a Q&A with the cast\, playwright\, director\, Marty Garbus\, and former NYPD Deputy Chief Michael Osgood. \nDon’t miss Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, part two of Food for Thought Productions’ new series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nUnlucky Gal tells the story of Jane Doe\, a twenty-seven year old gay black woman who was raped in Prospect Park in April\, 1994. \nTwo days later\, Mike McAlary of the The New York Daily News began publishing a series of three articles\, based on anonymous police sources\, claiming that Jane Doe was lying about her assault\, although the NYPD did have evidence to the contrary. Devastated\, Jane Doe sued McAlary and the The New York Daily News for libel\, but lost. \nIn 2013 the play Lucky Guy\, based on McAlary\, opened on Broadway. Marty Garbus wrote an editorial for The New York Times pointing out that Jane Doe’s story still had not been told\, and asked\, “Who will tell Jane Does’ story?” \nIn 2017\, Michael Osgood\, Deputy Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit\, heard a radio interview that mentioned the Jane Doe case and Marty’s op-ed. Osgood read the piece\, and knowing Garbus’ reputation\, reopened the case. In 2018\, DNA evidence revealed Jane Doe’s attacker. \nJane Doe’s fight for justice took nearly two and a half decades. It’s time to tell her story. They include: The Shoemaker starring Danny Aiello\, directed by Antony Marsellis; She’s Of A Certain Age; The Round Table (w/ Oscar & Tony winner Peter Stone)\, and When Truth Is Not Enough. Her play\, Love Divided By\, was produced by the Actors Studio and was made into a film with an original score by Philip Glass. The film reopened MoMA’s Titus II theatre. Her other films include: Something Like That\, A Broken Sole\, Come On (Hamptons Film Festival.) Her TV credits include; Did You Know My Husband? with Louise Lasser & Carole Shelley (PBS); The Comedy Zone with Patty Duke & Paul Reiser (CBS); Guiding Light and Loving (CBS). \nSusan authored the acclaimed books Creativity and Creativity In Film and has written for NY Magazine and Playbill. So to me\, Milton Berle playing on Saturday a few blocks from my house — that was just another Saturday night.” Milton Berle\, along with comedians like Woody Allen\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Joan Rivers and Marc Maron got their start in the Catskills resorts\, where the Jewish population of New York would go to unwind. The Catskills comedy scene has long since died away\, leaving empty hotels and a fading legacy. Epstein says: “I’m realizing that my memory and my experience\, along with the historic significance of it\, you know\, it called me to do something theatrically about it.” \nChanneling these comedians and his own memories of sneaking into comedy shows and working in famous hotels\, Epstein has created a one-man show to honor both the famous and the forgotten Borscht Belt funnymen who changed the landscape of American comedy. The audience can look forward to meeting Jimmy Grecco\, Epstein’s composite of the comedic personalities he knew and witnessed\, who will narrate a journey through a formative piece of theatrical history. SUMMARY:Share and Learn - Sustainable Recycling in NYC: Tour the SMR Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a FREE guided tour of SMR’s Sunset Park Materials Recovery Facility\, courtesy of our June Speaking of Science guest Ron Gonen. \nOur guide will do a presentation on the history of the facility and recycling in NYC\, and review the facility’s operations and how recycling works in NYC and in general. Visitors will also view the state-of-the-art facility from a viewing deck and questions are welcome throughout the tour. \nAbout the SMR facility: \nNYC operates the largest curbside recycling program in the United States. SMR services the City of New York with its facilities in Queens\, the Bronx and Jersey City\, and its newest Brooklyn location which opened in 2013\, the Sunset Park Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The Brooklyn plant is the largest commingled recycling facility in North America. SMR is the processor of 100% of the metal\, glass and plastic and 50% of the paper collected by the NYC Department of Sanitation throughout the five boroughs. \nA safety waiver (download) must be completed and either emailed to the tour guide ahead of time or brought in-person (guide email address is available to registrants). Printed copies will also be available on-site. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. Children second grade and above are welcome to join with a parent or guardian and safety waver. \nFor questions\, please contact organizing member Carol Portlock. \nThis tour is limited to 30 participants. They are a 15 to 20 minute walk from the subway and have free parking on site! \nIf you take the subway\, you can take the D/N/R to 36th St. The station is at 36th St. and 4th Ave. Walk up 4th Ave. and turn left on 29th St. Walk all the way down 29th St. – past 3rd Ave\, past 2nd Ave.\, past the gates of our facility. Walk up to the security guard booth. Inform the guard you are here for a tour. The guard will direct you to a pedestrian walkway on the right that will lead to our Administration Building & Recycling Education Center. Please remain on the walkway and do not walk through the parking lot. \nIf you are driving from the north (Manhattan\, Queens\, etc.)\, you can take the BQE to exit 23\, 39th St. Turn right on 2nd Avenue. Continue almost to the end of the road. Turn left on 29th St. Continue past gates to security booth. \nIf you are driving from the south (South Brooklyn\, NJ\, etc.)\, you can take the BQE to 3rd Avenue.
