Join us on Gandhi’s birthday for an interview with Emmy Award-winning journalist\, novelist\, and anti-trafficking NGO founder Ruchira Gupta. \nClick here to RSVP to join in-person \nClick here to RSVP to watch online \nAbout Ruchira \nRuchira Gupta is an Emmy winning journalist and founder of the anti sex trafficking NGO Apne Aap\, that empowers women and girls to exit systems of prostitution. I Kick and I Fly is her debut fiction novel. \nShe has been awarded the French Ordre National du Mérite\, the Clinton Global Citizen Award\, and the UN NGO CSW Woman of Distinction\, among other honors\, for her contribution to the establishment of the UN Trafficking Fund for Survivors\, the passage of the US Trafficking Victims Protection Act and her grassroots activism with Apne Aap. She also holds a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Smith College. She has co-written a book with Gloria Steinem\, “As if Women Matter” and edited two anthologies\, “River of Flesh” and “Renu’s letters to Birju Babu”. \nRuchira has worked for the United Nations in Nepal\, Thailand\, Kosovo\, Iran\, and the USA. She occasionally teaches at the New York University’s Center for Global Affairs as a visiting faculty. \nRuchira divides her time between New York and Forbesganj\, her childhood home in the foothills of the Himalayas\, where she furthers the work of Apne Aap and paints her mother’s garden. Visit her online at ruchiragupta.com. \nAbout Leader Dr. Joe Chuman \nDr. Joe Chuman started on his road to Ethical Leadership as a leader-in-Training here at the New York Society in 1969 and continued his training at the Bergen Society\, after which he became Leader of the Essex County Society before returning to the Bergen Society\, where he served as leader for 46 years\, retiring in January 2021. Joe has been a leader at the New York Society Since 2008. During his long career\, Joe has worked as an academic\, a social justice activist\, a speaker\, and a writer. He has been teaching human rights in the Graduate School at Columbia University for more than 20 years\, teaches human rights at Hunter College\, and has taught at the U. N. University for Peace in Costa Rica and at other colleges. \nAs an activist\, Joe has advocated for civil liberties\, human rights\, and other progressive causes and has frequently testified before the New Jersey legislature on such issues as religious freedom\, gun violence prevention\, death penalty opposition\, and immigrant rights. He founded the Northern New Jersey Coalition for Asylum Seekers 20 years ago and still serves as its president. Joe has written numerous book chapters\, encyclopedia entrees\, scores of Op-eds\, and is the author of “Speaking of Ethics\,” a compilation of essays on Ethical Culture. DESCRIPTION:Join us for soulful jazz vocalist/pianist/composer Mala Waldron\, the daughter of renowned jazz pianist Mal Waldron (and goddaughter of Billie Holiday). Mala follows in her father’s footsteps with original compositions that reflect a mélange of influences\, from jazz to R&B\, from pop to calypso. She loves featuring the works of her favorite composers\, as well\, so you’ll hear her arrangements of tunes by Stevie Wonder\, Sting\, Horace Silver\, and Burt Bacharach\, among others. She received a B.A. degree from the SUNY College at Old Westbury studying with Ken (Makanda) McIntyre\, Richard Harper\, James “Jabbo” Ware and Warren Smith. Her featured recordings include her CD debut\, “Lullabye” (tribute to godmother\, Billie Holiday)\, a duo project with her father\, pianist\, composer Mal Waldron (“He’s My Father”) and “Always There” which\, in addition to being her first U.S. release\, was licensed by Columbia Records (Japan) and voted one of the Top 20 Jazz CDs of 2006 by JazzUSA.  \nSTEVE SALERNO (guitar) is an active performer of Jazz and Classical music.  He has performed throughout Europe\, China\, Malaysia\, Puerto Rico\, Canada\, Cuba\, Russia and the United States.  He is a member of the Ray Anderson Organic Quartet (with Gary Versace and Tommy Campbell)\, Paul Smoker 4-Tet (with Drew Gress and Phil Haynes)\, Mala Waldron Quartet (with Miriam Sullivan and Michael T.A. Thompson)\, Blue Pipa Trio (with Dean Johnson) and leads a variety of groups\, including his Jazz quartet\, Exiles. \nHe has performed with many of today’s top musicians including Jaco Pastorius\, John Abercrombie\, Regina Carter\, Mark Dresser and Peter Erskine.  Among his latest recordings are Ray Anderson’s Being The Point\, Mala Waldron’s Always There\, Paul Smoker’s Cool Lives\, and Min Xiao-Fen’s Blue Pipa. He was music director for the PBS special Shoreline Sonata\, which first aired in May\, 2009. \nHe is the author of Planet Wave’s Chord Master (an 8\,000 chord voicing dictionary)\, which was recently voted the number one music application for Apple’s iPhone\, and is on the musician’s advisory board for D’Addario Strings. \nMARCUS MCLAURINE was born in Omaha\, Nebraska. He  studied music at the University of Nebraska before moving to Los Angeles. He was a member of Horace Tapscott’s Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension for part of the 1970s. He later joined the military in 1976 where he played in the 590th Air Force band. After four years\, he left the air force and moved to New York City. McLaurine began a long association with Clark Terry in the early 1980s\, recording together numerous times. McLaurine recorded several albums under the leadership of pianist Abdullah Ibrahim in the 1990s\, and has been an instructor in jazz at William Paterson University since 1997.  He is a member of the band\, Native Soul\, with Steve Johns\, Noah Haidu\, and Peter Brainin. The group has released several CDs including: Rough Jazz (2006)\, Soul Step (2011)\, and One Mind (2012). \nLUCIANNA PADMORE Bronx native drummer Lucianna Padmore has been praised by Modern Drummer magazine for her “Deep grooves and serious fusion chops.” Lucianna is an alumnus of LaGuardia High School as well as New School University. Miss Padmore plays in the rock fusion band Stratospheerius with electric violinist Joe Deninzon\, appearing on their last two CD’s\,”Live Wires”\, “Headspace”\, and “The Next World”. She also plays with the Primordial Jazz Funktet\, and on their current album\, “We are Here”. Performing highlights include performances with Jazz tuba player Bob Stewart\, opening for performing with or on the same bill with such names as Chico Debarge\, Bertha Hope\, Mimi Jones\, Pat Tandy Jimmy Heath\, Clark Terry\, Quincy Jones\, Sun Ra Archestra\, to name a few. \nAbout the Ethical NYC Jazz Cafe \n“Totally delighted the whole evening!
