SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Mattie Kahn: 'Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nGirls have been a driving force for change since the founding of this country\, and they have played crucial roles in almost every major protest movement in American history. I’ll address their unique contributions as well as their routine underestimation. How might we learn from girls? What progress might be possible if we did? \nAbout Mattie Kahn\nMattie Kahn is an award-winning writer and editor. Her work has been published in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, Harper’s Bazaar\, Vogue\, Vox\, and more. She was the culture director at Glamour\, where she covered women’s issues and politics\, and a staff editor at Elle. Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America’s Revolutions is her first book. Visit her website at mattiekahn.com. \nAbout Young and Restless\nNine months before Rosa Parks kicked off the bus boycotts\, Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery\, Alabama. She was fifteen. In 1912\, women’s rights activists organized a massive march in support of women’s suffrage. Leading them up Fifth Avenue in Manhattan was not one of the mothers of the movement\, but a teenage Chinese immigrant named Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. Half a century before the better-known movements for workers’ rights began\, over 1\,500 girls—some as young as ten—walked out of factories in Lowell\, Massachusetts\, demanding safer working conditions and higher wages in one of the nation’s first-ever labor strikes. \nYoung women have been disenfranchised and discounted\, but the true retelling of major social movements in America reveals their might: they have ignited almost every single one. \nYoung and Restless recounts one of the most foundational and underappreciated forces in moments of American revolution: teenage girls. From the American Revolution itself to the Civil Rights Movement to nuclear disarmament protests and the women’s liberation movement\, through Black Lives Matter and school strikes for climate\, Mattie Kahn uncovers how girls have leveraged their unique strengths\, from fandom to intimate friendships\, to organize and lay serious political groundwork for movements that often sidelined them. Their stories illuminate how much we owe to girls throughout the generations\, what skills young women use to mobilize and find their voices\, and\, crucially\, what we can all stand to learn from them. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection\nNot on My Watch \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Book Discussion Group: 'A Year to Live' by Stephen Levine
DESCRIPTION:Join Leader Dr. Nori Rost every first Sunday for a new book discussion group exploring A Year to Live by Stephen Levine. \nFree and open to the public. First Sundays: February 4\, March 3\, April 7\, May 5\, June 2\, ending on July 7 \nAbout A Year to Live\n“Stephen Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity\, truth\, and an open heart. I can think of no one better qualified to help us enrich our lives through embracing the mystery of death.”—Ram Dass \n“A Year to Live is a poetic and deeply passionate exploration into what creates human suffering. It is also a lyrical and generous-spirited guide to life.”—San Francisco Examiner \nIn A Year to Live\, Stephen Levine\, author of the perennial bestseller Who Dies?\, teaches us how to live each moment\, each hour\, each day mindfully—as if it were all that was left. On his deathbed\, Socrates exhorted his followers to practice dying as the highest form of wisdom. Levine decided to live this way himself for a whole year\, and now he shares with us how such immediacy radically changes our view of the world and forces us to examine our priorities. \nMost of us go to extraordinary lengths to ignore\, laugh off\, or deny our grief over the fact that we are going to die\, but preparing for death is one of the most rational and rewarding acts of a lifetime. It is an exercise that gives us the opportunity to deal with unfinished business and enter into a new and vibrant relationship with life. Levine provides us with a year-long program of intensely practical strategies and powerful guided meditations to help with this work\, so that whenever the ultimate moment does arrive for each of us\, we will not feel that it has come too soon. \nAbout Stephen Levine\nStephen Levine (1937–2016) was an American poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques. His bestselling books in the United States and Europe (including Healing into Life and Death and A Gradual Awakening) are considered groundbreaking in their field. He also collaborated with his wife and spiritual partner\, Ondrea\, on a number of influential works such as Who Dies? and Embracing the Beloved.

SUMMARY:The New York Virtuoso Singers: 'Composers Without Borders: The Ties That Bind Us - American\, Iranian\, Ukrainian\, Russian\, & Chinese Composers'
DESCRIPTION:The constitution’s preamble begins with the words “We the people\,” a term which over the centuries has taken on a life of its own. In the context of this concert by The New York Virtuoso Singers\, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us\, we focus on the unity of humankind\, not individual governments\, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. Our concert highlights the unending compositional creativity of humankind despite the complicated interrelationships of the countries represented. \nFrom Iryna Aleksiychuk\, composer of Gloria Patri: Music is a language that is understood by all people of the world. It does not require translation. Music just touches your heart – and you rejoice\, cry\, laugh or feel sad with it. It is wonderful that in our time\, when there is so much grief and violence in the World of People\, we can find refuge\, joy\, and peace in the World of Music. The task of the composer is to bring this light and peace to people\, so that they become better and kinder towards each other. And let the music speak\, but not the guns! \nTickets\nStudents 25 years and younger: $10\nGeneral: $20\nAt the Door: $25 \nClick here to purchase tickets online! \nProgram\nJoel Mandelbaum: Sea Surface Full of Clouds\nChen Yi: Spring Dreams\nAlfred Schnittke: Concerto for Choir\nRamin Amir Arjomand: Salve Regina\nIryna Aleksiychuk: Gloria Patri
