SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Charles Moore: The Soul of Rehabilitation Through the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nCharles Moore will give a brief intro of himself and RTA\, and present a short film called\, “The Soul of RTA” which showcases the RTA’s arts-in-prison program. He will then open it up to an informal discussion with the audience members. \nLaunched at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in 1996\, Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) is a world leader in arts-in-corrections teaching communication\, collaboration\, problem-solving and other critical life skills through a unique mix of art forms. \nWith our new reentry program\, Reimagining Myself®\, RTA prepares incarcerated people approaching release for the social and emotional challenges they will likely face when transitioning back to their communities. \nNow operating in Westchester\, Ulster\, Sullivan\, Dutchess and Erie counties\, RTA is expanding its transformative work to prisons throughout NYS\, including facilities in under-resourced areas. \nRTA’s ongoing success is proof that restorative\, cost effective programming works. Less than 3% of RTA members return to prison\, compared to the national recidivism rate of 60%. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Charles Moore\nCharles Moore is the Director of Programs & Operations. He is the first RTA alumnus to be hired to work full time for the organization. He oversees program planning and management in all the facilities where RTA operates. He audits workshops\, coordinates alumni projects\, and manages the organization’s in-prison steering committees. Charles holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Services from Mercy University and a Master’s in Professional Studies from New York Theological Seminary. \nMonthly Collection\nNew York Civil Liberties Union \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Climate and Energy Game Night with City Atlas
DESCRIPTION:Hosted the City Atlas network! \nIf we are to confront the climate crisis at scale\, we will need to collaborate and coordinate across fields\, neighborhoods\, cultures and industries. A serious energy transition demands such coordination (that’s what Energetic the game teaches us). Collaborative games and policy making forums (such as deliberative citizens’ assemblies) point the way forward to enable us to do this at scale. They orient participants towards long-term goals and enable them to work through scenarios of the coming decades\, in order to discuss what policies will be most efficient and successful at reducing emissions while maintaining public support. \nWe can teach everyone in the US (and then around the world) how to fix climate change with accurate\, updatable info\, scaling from a 2.5 hr game to a monthlong series of workshops\, matched to the region in which they live. And it’s fun! \nEnergetic as seen in New York Times\, on NY1\, and featured in METROPOLIS \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite!

SUMMARY:SOUND~EARTH~MOTION: Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance Performance and Gala
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Time Lapse Dance ensemble with live musical performances by composer Matthew Burtner\, MET Orchestra musicians\, and pianist Jeffrey Middleton. \nSchedule\n7:00-8:00pm – Performance\n8:00-9:30pm – Gala Reception with Artists \nAbout SOUND~EARTH~MOTION\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble exploring human entanglement with nature. Featured works highlight the climate-engaged collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. Arbor dwells on the intimacy of trees. In Wind Rose\, dancers render changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch. A rare reprisal of Sperling’s masterful solo Clair de lune evokes the shimmer of a moonlit sky. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract the essence of human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers variously appearing to conjure a growing forest or hovering storm clouds. The company’s unique style of movement draws inspiration from and furthers the art form created by dance icon Loie Fuller (1862-1928) a century ago. \n“conjures a timelapse photograph of a flower bud opening to full blossom”\n—Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord \n“[Sperling’s] mission is climate activism through body consciousness”\n—Janet Koplos\, Arts Writer & NYSEC Member \nFollowing the performance\, enjoy a sparkling evening\, from wine to conversation\, with the artists\, fellow Time Lapse Dance fans\, and members of the Ethical NYC community. Light dinner fare served at this cocktail-style gala. \nBuy Tickets\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite \nArtists & Performers\nTime Lapse Dance Dancers: Frances Barker\, Anika Hunter\, Maki Kitahara\, Nicole Lemelin\, Jody Sperling\, Sarah Tracy & Rathi Varma \nMET Orchestra String Quartet: Bruno Eicher (violin)\, Sarah Vonsattel (violin)\, Kari Jane Docter (cello) \nCostumes: Mary Jo Mecca (construction)\, Gina Nagy Burns (textile artist) \nThis program is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture\, with the generous support of the Peck Stacpoole Foundation\, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
