SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Opus 118 Harlem School of Music
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nOpus 118 was founded in 1991 by Roberta Guaspari with a mission to provide quality music instruction and teacher development in an environment that nurtures excellence and creativity\, without regard to economic status\, age\, race\, religion\, gender\, sexual orientation\, or physical ability. \nSince its founding\, Opus 118 has helped more than 6\,000 students from the greater Harlem area reach their potential through free in-school group music lessons and highly subsidized private lessons making music affordable and accessible to our community. For the purposes of this talk we will feature our founder\, alumni and students and how music has changed their lives. \nFor more than 31 years\, Opus 118 Harlem School of Music has used music education and string playing to promote the love of music\, improve academic performance\, provide positive alternatives to drugs and violence\, build confidence and self-esteem and help children explore the world. Opus 118’s work is documented in the Academy Award-nominated documentary\, Small Wonders\, and in the feature film Music of the Heart\, starring Meryl Streep in her Academy Award-nominated performance as Roberta Guaspari\, Opus 118’s Co-Founder and Artistic Director. \nStarting only as a day program\, in 2022\, due to parent demand\, Opus 118 Harlem School of Music added an After-School Program\, which expanded on the success of our nationally recognized In-School Music Program. This additional After-School Program allowed us to offer opportunities for New York City public school students to obtain one-on-one and ensemble instruction after-school. This program is a valuable resource for children who may not have music programs in their schools at all\, and instruction for adults who wish to learn a musical instrument or advance their musical skills. Having been in continuous operation since 1991\, Opus 118 alumni have gone on to have illustrious careers in every career imaginable\, of which many return back to our program becoming Master Teacher such as Amanda Negron and Nicole Wright who will be featured today. As we continue to grow\, Opus 118 remains committed to East Harlem as we continue to provide access and opportunity to music education to all the students of our community. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nMonthly Collection\nRehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Juneteenth Performance: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, best-selling author\, journalist and social commentator Ellis Cose\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis\, the cast includes Nesha Ward\, Larry Pine\, Michael Citriniti\, Greg Mullavey (“Mary Hartman\, Mary Hartman”)\, and Jon Stewart. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.
