SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Ethics and the Theater: Love Letters
DESCRIPTION:Free! \nDon’t miss our Ethics and the Theater team’s annual Summer Sunday Platform featuring a staged reading of A.R. Gurney’s Pulitzer Prize-finalist Love Letters: \nAndrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner\, both born to wealth and position\, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached\, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school\, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” \nWhile Andy is off at war Melissa marries\, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries\, becomes a successful attorney\, gets involved in politics and\, eventually\, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile\, her marriage in tatters\, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos\, drinks more than she should\, and becomes estranged from her children. \nEventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair\, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter\, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death\, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant\, and gave to\, each other over the years—physically apart\, perhaps\, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. \nMonthly Collection\nProject Renewal \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Voter Postcard Writing Gathering: Fight Voter Suppression with Reclaim Our Vote
DESCRIPTION:Fighting voter suppression is both more important and more challenging than ever\, and directly engaging voters is crucial to protecting and expanding our democracy. \nBring a friend and join the Society’s Social Service Board for our next Reclaim Our Vote postcard writing gathering! So far\, our team has prepared postcards to help thousands of voters learn about\, and then beat\, voter suppression in their states. \nNext up: Texas and North Carolina \nPostcards created at this gathering will be mailed to lists of targeted voters in October\, ensuring they arrive before election day. \nCost\nSupply packets include your requested quantity of postcards\, labels\, addresses\, and instructions. The cost is .60 per postcard with stamps\, or .10 per postcard without stamps. Payment info will be sent to you when you request the packet. \nCan’t Make This Gathering? You Can Still Help!\nSimply email Social Service Board chair Janet Rose at rov.nysec@gmail.com to place an order for postcard supplies in multiples of 20. Supply packets can be picked up at the Society Monday-Thursday\, 10am-4pm. \nPostcards will be targeting voters in Georgia and Texas\, and won’t be mailed until early to mid-October\, so consider taking a many as you think you can complete before then! \nRSVP\nPlease RSVP to rov.nysec@gmail.com if you plan to attend. \nThank you for whatever help you can give! For questions\, please contact rov.nysec@gmail.com. \nAbout Reclaim Our Vote\nReclaim Our Vote is a campaign of the Center for Common Ground\, a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to empower under-represented voters to fully participate in elections. To support that mission we provide voter education on how to monitor voter registration status\, find voting locations (vote centers\, dropboxes and voting precincts) as well as county contacts for local boards of elections or registrars. \nFor more information about ROV\, please read the guidelines for postcard writers and watch this short ROV training video above.
