SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers - Green Halloween: Sustainable Costume Making
DESCRIPTION:FREE – Art\, snacks\, and Earth-friendly fun — Newcomers are ALWAYS welcome! \nIt’s an unfortunate fact that Halloween is terrible for the environment: most decorations and costumes are used only once before being thrown away\, and they’re often made of plastics and harmful chemicals that can persist in the environment for centuries. \nSo\, let’s do our part to green Halloween! Join us for our annual Young Ethical Explorers DIY sustainable costume workshop\, where kids of all ages are invited to turn recycled materials of all kinds–cardboard\, fabric\, plastic\, old clothes\, and more–into their own unique costume creations. The Society will provide a trove of donated materials and attendees are also invited to bring your own! \nRSVP\nSpace is limited! Click here to RSVP on Eventbrite \nAbout Young Ethical Explorers\nYoung Ethical Explorers is the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Humanist Sunday school for ages 3-11. The Society’s Youth and Family programs empower young people and their parents in their ethical development\, friendships\, community service\, and social activism. We welcome all families who want their children of all ages to develop caring relationships\, gain an appreciation for diversity\, and explore their personal beliefs in a progressive\, non-sectarian\, Humanist setting. \nSessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, volunteer projects\, and field trips. \nFor more information about our youth and family programming\, please contact Youth and Family Programs Coordinator Audrey Kindred at ethicalfamilies@nysec.org or visit ethical.nyc/families.

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Carey Russell: 'Land Ethics Trilogy\, Part II'
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\, in-person and online! \nThe second of three talks exploring the concept of land ethics\, as established in the modern era by Aldo Leopold in his perennial classic A Sand County Almanac. Land ethics expand our ethical frameworks\, historically limited to human relationships in Western culture\, to include nature. The first talk focused on discovering and cultivating land ethics within our own personal narratives and daily lives. This talk\, and the third\, will address the integration of these values into society and the broader philosophical implications of these values\, which we call deep ecology. \nThis talk will be followed by a tree walk in Central Park at 1:00. \nWatch Online\nClick to join at start time | ID 863 0430 0961 | Passcode 609424\nTo join by phone (audio only)\, dial (929) 205-6099 and enter the Zoom ID above. \nAbout Carey Russell\nCarey is a naturalist\, photographer\, and filmmaker. He founded The Dendro Lab\, a platform to foster a broader public awareness of trees and forest ecology. As a photographer he is the author of The New Arcadians: Photographs from Scout Camp. As a filmmaker\, he has worked with director\, Terrence Malick\, as an associate producer and editor of The New World; assisted cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki on The Tree of Life; and directed and photographed the 10-part documentary series Tibetan Stories. Carey holds a master’s degree in forestry and is a member of the International Dendrology Society. He’s a certified Interpretive Guide through the National Association for Interpretation and a certified Master Naturalist in New York state where he is also a licensed trail guide. He lives in New York City where he can often be found botanizing in Central Park and leading tree walks to pass this literacy onto others. \nWatch Carey’s August 2024 Sunday Platform: ‘Land Ethics Trilogy Pt. I: The Making of a Young Naturalist”: \n \nMonthly Collection\nMissing and Murdered Indigenous Women USA \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Central Park Tree Walk with The Dendro Lab’s Carey Russell
DESCRIPTION:Are you ready to cultivate a closer and more familiar relationship with our neighborhood trees? If so\, set off on the right foot with a leisurely walk in Central Park to learn the key concepts used in dendrology\, which you know more commonly as the simple practice of tree identification. Each species of tree has its own unique characteristics and behavior\, which make it surprisingly easy to identify – but only for those who know what they are looking for! If you’re interested in starting or furthering your practice as a naturalist\, learning our local trees is a great place to start. A walk through the park or even around the block will never be quite the same again. \nYour guide for this one-hour presentation will be today’s Sunday Platform guest Carey Russell\, a local dendrologist and founding director of The Dendro Lab\, an organization dedicated to sharing the environmental literacy of trees. \nTo Join\nMeet at the Society Meeting House lobby at 1:00pm – 2 W 64th St. (at the corner of Central Park West).
