DESCRIPTION:Community Justice is a growing framework within criminal justice reform that aims to improve the quality of life for community members both by reducing crime and by reducing the use of incarceration. But how can a government-controlled justice system truly engage with everyday residents in a meaningful way? This conversation will explore personal experiences in different community environments\, the nuts and bolts of community justice in action\, and how to apply the principles of community justice to more meaningfully engage your own neighbors. \nCommunity lunch follows! \nAbout Lindsey Price Jackson\nLindsey Price Jackson\, JD\, MPA\, is the Associate Director of Community Justice at the Center for Justice Innovation. With this team\, she trains and consults with jurisdictions nationally and internationally. Before joining the Center\, Jackson conducted research and consulting projects with United Nations University’s Delta 8.7 project on human trafficking\, with Arnold Venture’s Pretrial Justice Initiative on prosecutorial discretion and on reform prosecutors nationwide\, and worked with the Vera Institute of Justice. Jackson began her career as a public defender at the Defender Association of Philadelphia\, including volunteering in the problem-solving Project Dawn Court for women with criminal histories of drug and prostitution offences. SUMMARY:Concert - Jody Sperling\, Time Lapse Dance and Matthew Burtner: Memories of Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Recently returned from a two-week\, three-city tour of Egypt\, Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance (TLD) ensemble are offering a FREE concert in partnership with The New York Society for Ethical Culture\, the site of their ongoing Eco-Artist-Residency. The company was following in the footsteps of Loïe Fuller who toured Egypt with her dancers in 1905! Memories of Egypt features a TLD world premiere in Fuller style\, repertory favorites\, and a souvenir from the journey. The company’s seven luminous dancers are joined by Emmy Award-winning composer Matthew Burtner for a transporting evening of live music and dance. \nThe tour almost didn’t happen! A day before the company was to leave for Egypt\, the US State Department terminated the award that was partially funding the tour. You can read our story in Medium and Dance Magazine . You can still support TLD’s fundraising campaign to make-up for the lost federal funds.  \nThe evening’s highlight is the world premiere of Fractal Memories\, created for the Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light. The dance is a contemporary tribute to Fuller\, choreographed by Sperling illuminating the entanglement of bodies through time. The culminating moment is a striking reimagining of Fuller’s Fire Dance. \nIn Serpentine Swells\, the company riffs on a spiralling melodic line evoking the crest and fall of ocean currents. This ensemble improvisation was presented in Egypt as musical collaboration between Butner and Egyptian oud player Aly Eissa. \nThe evening also reprises Arbor\, dwelling on the intimacy of trees\, and Sperling’s hypnotic solo Piece for Northern Sky\, a meditation on planetary motion. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers appearing to conjure a growing forest or a swirling inferno. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 22nd\, for a powerful event in support of Mahmoud Khalil\, Palestine\, and civil liberties. Together we will defend free speech and reaffirm our collective commitment to ending the genocide of the Palestinian people. \nHear from prominent activists\, artists\, human rights advocates\, and members of Mahmoud Khalil’s legal team as we stand together against repression and strengthen our movement for a free Palestine. \nOn the evening of March 8th\, plainclothes agents with the Department of Homeland Security illegally arrested Mahmoud Khalil\, a leading activist at Columbia University\, at his home\, asserting that they were revoking his Green Card. At the time of the writing of this letter\, he remains in ICE custody. \nThis is an unprecedented action that signals the dawn of a new wave of attacks on both the Palestine solidarity movement and our civil liberties. \nSince Mahmoud’s arrest\, tens of thousands have taken to the streets and over three million have signed a petition demanding his release. Meanwhile\, the Trump administration has continued its assault on our students. At Columbia University\, over two dozen students were suspended\, expelled\, or have had their degrees revoked over their support for Palestine and just last night the Department of Homeland Security raided the dorm rooms of two other student activists. \nIt is no coincidence that the escalation of attacks on the Pro-Palestine movement is happening right now. Since March 2nd\, Israel has blocked all humanitarian aid into Gaza and since March 12 has completely shut off electricity\, causing a total blackout throughout all of Gaza.
