SUMMARY:AEU All-Societies Sunday Platform with Seth Andrews: 'The Brick Wall Brain: Why Facts (Usually) Don’t Change Minds'
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Ceremonial Hall for our in-person watch party! Bagels and coffee available\, no lunch today. \nWe present solid data. They go blank\, get angry\, or walk out. Why isn’t evidence breaking through belief barriers? Seth Andrews shares his perspective on “Identity Beliefs” and how to perhaps carve the crack that lets in some light. If bullet points aren’t working…what does? \nJoin Online\nClick Here to RSVP on Zoom \nAbout Seth Andrews\nSeth Andrews is a former evangelical and Christian broadcaster who now hosts The Thinking Atheist\, one of the most popular podcasts and online atheist communities in the world. The Thinking Atheist is not a person. It is an icon encouraging all to reject faith and pursue reason and evidence. He also hosts a second podcast\, “True Stories with Seth Andrews.” \nWith a mix of humor and heart\, Seth Andrews has spoken for audiences large and small in the U.S\, Canada\, Europe\, and Australia about his former faith\, the promotion of science and skepticism\, the importance of Humanism in this often crazy world\, and why we should all pursue a personal relationship with reality. \nMonthly Collection\nBraver Angels \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Young Ethical Explorers: Self-Empowerment\, Self-Advocacy\, and Conflict Resolution with Gabriella Belfiglio: ‘Standing Up For Our Values’
DESCRIPTION:Newcomers are always welcome! \nEvery other week we’re joined by Gabriella Belfiglio\, a long-time anti-bullying and self-defense teacher (and award-winning poet!) who will lead children in becoming empowered to express themselves and resolve conflicts with confidence and compassion–to become ‘upstanders’ not merely bystanders. \nChildren will learn how to stand up for themselves and others\, and gain resilience through skill-focused exercises and explorations led by Gabriella. This will be joyful and fun\, but will empower children with essential tools to face difficult moments\, hurt feelings\, and challenging peer pressures at school\, on the playground\, and beyond. \nFREE! Recommended for Ages 7-13 \nTo RSVP\, or for any questions\, please email Youth and Family Programs Coordinator Audrey Kindred at akindred@nysec.org. \nAbout Young Ethical Explorers\nYoung Ethical Explorers is the New York Society for Ethical Culture’s Humanist Sunday school for ages 3-11. Sessions raise issues of personal identity and integrity\, appreciation and respect for others\, and knowledge of religions\, philosophies\, and social concerns. Topics are explored in an age-appropriate way through discussion\, storytelling\, dramatization\, music\, art\, games\, and field trips. \nRSVP is essential to guarantee your place and for planning purposes. If you are enrolled for the season or are members of Ethical NYC your spot is guaranteed. To RSVP as a guest\, become a member\, or enroll in season\, please contact Audrey at ethicalfamilies@nysec.org. Newcomers and visitors are always welcome!

SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Productions Presents: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions and Ethical Culture for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, former ACLU President Susan Herman\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis \nStarring Jack Wetherall (the title character in The Elephant Man on Broadway) and Nesha Ward \nWith an added element of dance and music featuring Broadway tap dancer Gene Castle and guitarist Michael Citriniti \nFollowed by a discussion with: Martin Garbus and former ACLU President Susan Herman. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.
