SUMMARY:Coming of Age
DESCRIPTION:“Coming-of-age” marks a young person’s transition from childhood to adulthood. Families are invited to enroll their tweens and early teens in our coming-of-age program\, whose guiding principle is to provide a safe and creative environment\, and ethical grounding\, to empower every young adult to blossom within our community. The age at which this transition takes place varies in society\, as does the nature of the transition. It can be a simple legal convention or part of a ritual as practiced in many societies and religions. \nIn our diverse community\, we welcome young people who are seeking an opportunity to mark their life path with a process and celebration focused on \n\nSelf-inquiry\nWorld awareness\nPersonal and social responsibility\nCommunity service\n\nRecognizing that children mature at different rates\, we meet with children and parents to determine when a child is ready\, and the curriculum is geared to the needs of the individual and family. With a Humanist anchor\, we will explore a world of ideas and values together.

SUMMARY:The Week\, Pt. I: Understanding the Ecological Crisis and Our Emotional Response (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:We are facing an ecological crisis that threatens much of what we take for granted today. When presented with information about this crisis we tend to either fall into a sense of overwhelm or despair (or cycle between the two)—these reactions prevent us from stepping forward to bring about the needed changes in our lives and communities to help secure a sustainable future for all. In the face of rapid environmental breakdown and climate change\, The Week is a group experience to help us see what’s coming\, and what we can do about it. \nLed by Society Executive Director and environmental activist Dan Donohue\, and taking place over three sessions\, The Week will give you a better understanding of the crisis and help you develop tools of emotional resilience so we can begin to take action both personally and as a community. \nSchedule\nEach session will be centered on a 1-hour video from The Week. We will watch the first video together in Session 1\, and the others will be watched at home prior to sessions 2 and 3. We will engage in facilitated discussions about the videos in each session. \nSession 1: Understanding the problem and our emotional response (In-Person)\nSunday 4/20 • 1pm – 3pm \nSession 2: How did we get here and emotional tools for the journey (Online)\nTuesday 4/22 • 6:30pm – 8pm \nSession 3: What can we do and building emotional resilience (Online)\nThursday 4/24 • 6:30pm – 8pm \nZoom link for the two online sessions will be provided before the program begins! \nRegistration is required. This program is also free\, but participants are encouraged to make a donation to The Week. \nAbout Dan Donohue\nMany of you know Dan from his role as Executive Director here at the Society. Dan is also an environmental activist\, coach\, and certified meditation teacher. He’s spoken about the climate and ecological crisis at organizations\, rallies\, street corners\, and subways. \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP
