SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: The Undiscovered Country
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \n“Hope is a place you build\,” Dr. Matthew Spetter once observed. But what happens when we stop building it? \nAcross America\, many of the places where people once learned to work together—neighborhood associations\, civic organizations\, congregations\, clubs\, volunteer groups\, and local institutions—have weakened or disappeared. As civic engagement declines\, so too does something less easily measured: our sense that we can shape the future together. We become more isolated\, more distrustful\, and increasingly spectators to forces that seem beyond our control. \nThe Undiscovered Country explores the relationship between civic life and hope\, and asks what happens when a society loses the habits and institutions that teach people how to participate in something larger than themselves. At a moment when many of our old assumptions about community\, democracy\, and social stability are being tested\, we are entering genuinely uncharted territory.\nBut an undiscovered country is not necessarily a place to fear. It is also a place we have not yet built. Through renewed civic engagement\, stronger communities\, and the simple act of working alongside one another\, we may yet discover a country that is more connected\, more resilient\, and perhaps even more healing than the one we leave behind. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\nJoin link TBA. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate\, stimulate personal growth\, inspire reflection and action\, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music\, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader\, member\, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events\, pressing social issues\, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour. \nTo watch previous Sunday Platforms\, visit our Videos page and YouTube channel.

SUMMARY:Death Café at Ethical Culture
DESCRIPTION:The New York Society for Ethical Culture is pleased to relaunch the Ethical Culture Death Café\, a monthly gathering that invites open\, thoughtful\, and compassionate conversation about death and dying. \nA Death Café is a free\, informal forum where people—often strangers—come together over tea and cake to talk openly about death. The purpose is not to reach conclusions\, provide therapy\, or offer grief counseling\, but rather to increase awareness of mortality\, normalize conversations that are often avoided\, and create space for honest reflection. \nThese conversations can be serious\, curious\, humorous\, philosophical\, or deeply personal. Participants are encouraged to speak—or simply listen—at their own comfort level. By talking openly about death\, many people find they are better able to clarify what matters most to them and\, in turn\, live more fully and intentionally. \nThe Ethical Culture Death Café is guided by shared values of dignity\, respect\, and ethical inquiry. All are welcome\, regardless of beliefs\, background\, or experience. There is no cost to attend\, no required preparation\, and no expectation beyond mutual respect and confidentiality. \nJoin us for a meaningful afternoon of conversation\, connection\, and reflection in a supportive community setting. \n  \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Productions Presents: The People Versus Lenny Bruce
DESCRIPTION:Cause Celebre Productions and the New York Society for Ethical Culture are proud to present The People Versus Lenny Bruce\, based on the case of legendary lawyer Marty Garbus\, written by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis. \nSTARRING \n\nJohnny Anthony\nTimothy Doyle\nDan Grimaldi\nIanLithgow\nRoberta Wallach\nJack Wetheral\n\n“The story of Lenny Bruce and his New York trial is more relevant now than ever. It is a heart-breaking story filled with humor. It is the story of Lenny Bruce and his lawyer\, Marty Garbus who tried to save Bruce from the system and from himself! \nThe show is followed by a Q&A. \nAfter the trial\, License Inspector Herbert Ruhe\, the Prosecutor’s witness\, said the following to attorney Allen Schwartz: \n“We aimed for Bruce. We picked him out of all the performers. … I know he was not obscene… yet in a way I feel he had to be convicted.” \nThese words were spoken in 1964 but they could have easily be said in 2026. Jimmy Kimmel\, Rahm Emmanuel\, and The New York Times all referenced Lenny Bruce when speaking of how the First Amendment was under attack. When Inspector Ruhe testified against Bruce he knew Bruce was innocent. He not only rationalized his lies\, he bragged about them! \nPlease join us for this thought-provoking play and the discussion that will follow. \n>>> Purchase Tickets Here
