SUMMARY:Night Rangers: 'Take Back the Night: From Awareness to Action'
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” But who gets access to healthy nighttime environments\, and who bears the costs of excessive artificial lighting? From neighborhoods flooded with harsh lighting to communities working to reclaim their night skies\, light pollution is also an issue of environmental justice. \nWe’ll explore how people around the world are pushing for smarter lighting policies\, protecting wildlife\, and making their cities more livable. Then it’s our turn: together\, we’ll design our first Night Rangers civic action to help create a healthier\, more equitable New York City. \nRSVP Here \nAbout Night Rangers\nExplore the Night. Challenge Light Pollution. Reimagine New York City. \nWhat if we could bring back the stars to New York City? \nNew York may be the city that never sleeps\, but all that artificial light comes at a cost. From disrupting migrating birds and nocturnal wildlife to affecting human sleep and health\, light pollution is changing the natural world around us. But what can we do about it? \nNight Rangers is a new\, hands-on learning and action group for area residents who want to explore the science of light pollution\, experiment with creative solutions\, and help make New York City a healthier place for people and wildlife. \nEach month\, we’ll come together to investigate the hidden impacts of artificial light and discover how we can make a difference. This isn’t your typical lecture series. We’ll experiment with light\, explore Manhattan’s nighttime environment\, test new ideas\, and develop projects that combine science\, technology\, art\, and community action. \nWhat Will Night Rangers do? \n\nInvestigate the Night: Discover how artificial lighting affects wildlife\, ecosystems\, human health\, and our ability to see the stars.\nExperiment with Light: Explore lighting technologies\, measure light pollution\, and test practical solutions.\nGet Creative: Use science exhibits\, photography\, art\, design\, and storytelling to help people see their city in a different light.\nExplore the City: Investigate how Manhattan’s buildings\, streets\, parks\, and public spaces contribute to light pollution.\nTake Action: Develop community projects\, engage residents\, and explore ways to influence how New York City uses artificial lighting.\n\nYou don’t need a background in science or environmental activism. Just bring your curiosity\, imagination\, and willingness to experiment. \nWhen: Monthly on Sundays\, 4:00–5:30 p.m. \nWho: Older teens\, young adults\, and curious adults of all ages \nWhere: New York Society for Ethical Culture\, 2 West 64th Street\, NY\, NY 10023 \nThe night belongs to all of us. Join the Night Rangers and help New York City rediscover the dark.

SUMMARY:Death Café at Ethical Culture
DESCRIPTION:The New York Society for Ethical Culture is pleased to relaunch the Ethical Culture Death Café\, a monthly gathering that invites open\, thoughtful\, and compassionate conversation about death and dying. \nA Death Café is a free\, informal forum where people—often strangers—come together over tea and cake to talk openly about death. The purpose is not to reach conclusions\, provide therapy\, or offer grief counseling\, but rather to increase awareness of mortality\, normalize conversations that are often avoided\, and create space for honest reflection. \nThese conversations can be serious\, curious\, humorous\, philosophical\, or deeply personal. Participants are encouraged to speak—or simply listen—at their own comfort level. By talking openly about death\, many people find they are better able to clarify what matters most to them and\, in turn\, live more fully and intentionally. \nThe Ethical Culture Death Café is guided by shared values of dignity\, respect\, and ethical inquiry. All are welcome\, regardless of beliefs\, background\, or experience. There is no cost to attend\, no required preparation\, and no expectation beyond mutual respect and confidentiality. \nJoin us for a meaningful afternoon of conversation\, connection\, and reflection in a supportive community setting. \n  \nRSVP\nClick here to RSVP on Eventbrite
