SUMMARY:Night Rangers
DESCRIPTION:Details TBA \nAbout Night Rangers\nExplore the Night. Challenge Light Pollution. Reimagine New York City. \nWhat if we could bring back the stars to New York City? \nNew York may be the city that never sleeps\, but all that artificial light comes at a cost. From disrupting migrating birds and nocturnal wildlife to affecting human sleep and health\, light pollution is changing the natural world around us. But what can we do about it? \nNight Rangers is a new\, hands-on learning and action group for area residents who want to explore the science of light pollution\, experiment with creative solutions\, and help make New York City a healthier place for people and wildlife. \nEach month\, we’ll come together to investigate the hidden impacts of artificial light and discover how we can make a difference. This isn’t your typical lecture series. We’ll experiment with light\, explore Manhattan’s nighttime environment\, test new ideas\, and develop projects that combine science\, technology\, art\, and community action. \nWhat Will Night Rangers do? \n\nInvestigate the Night: Discover how artificial lighting affects wildlife\, ecosystems\, human health\, and our ability to see the stars.\nExperiment with Light: Explore lighting technologies\, measure light pollution\, and test practical solutions.\nGet Creative: Use science exhibits\, photography\, art\, design\, and storytelling to help people see their city in a different light.\nExplore the City: Investigate how Manhattan’s buildings\, streets\, parks\, and public spaces contribute to light pollution.\nTake Action: Develop community projects\, engage residents\, and explore ways to influence how New York City uses artificial lighting.\n\nYou don’t need a background in science or environmental activism. Just bring your curiosity\, imagination\, and willingness to experiment. \nWhen: Monthly on Sundays\, 4:00–5:30 p.m. \nWho: Older teens\, young adults\, and curious adults of all ages \nWhere: New York Society for Ethical Culture\, 2 West 64th Street\, NY\, NY 10023 \nThe night belongs to all of us. Join the Night Rangers and help New York City rediscover the dark.

SUMMARY:Ethical-izing Holiday Celebrations Workshop Series (Online)
DESCRIPTION:How can we celebrate holidays without setting aside our values around sustainability\, waste\, food\, commercialism\, and competition? \nThis three-part workshop series offers practical ways to rethink familiar celebrations with greater ethical intention. Participants will explore creative approaches to planning holidays with more integrity\, sustainability\, and joy. \nThe series is led by Audrey Kindred\, AEU Leader in Training and Children\, Youth\, and Family program leader at the New York Society for Ethical Culture\, and Anne Klaeysen\, Leader Emerita of the New York Society for Ethical Culture and former Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. \nWorkshops will meet on Zoom on the first Wednesday of October\, November\, and December\, beginning Wednesday\, October 7 at 7 p.m. ET. \nCourse Purpose and Description\nCourse Description: Ethical humans face annual cycles of celebration; we are called upon to Re-psyche-all! How many celebrations have you participated in where you have suspended and compromised your values (about sustainability\, about plastic usage\, about trash and recycling\, about health and food\, about commercialism and competition) for “just this one day” in order to meet the demands of the moment and maximize celebratory impact? This monthly workshop series offers some guidance and solutions. It offers concrete tools to plan for the month ahead with integrity and joy\, by reinvigorating and reinventing popular holidays with ethical creativity and consciousness. \nInstructors\nAudrey Kindred is currently an AEU leader in training. She runs Children\, Youth\, family programming at the New York Society for Ethical Culture and presides over the National Ethical Service. She has been involved with Ethical Culture for about 25 years. Fun fact for October: Audrey (awe-tree) has dressed up as many things\, including Mermaids\, the element of water\, Raggedy Andy\, the Queen of rock ‘n’ roll (with recycled records and album covers)\, and of course… A mighty tree. \nAnne Klaeysen is Leader Emerita of the NY Society for Ethical Culture and former Leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. She also served as Humanist chaplain at Columbia and New York Universities. Anne holds a Doctor of Ministry degree in pastoral care and counseling from Hebrew Union College and master’s degrees in business from NYU and German from SUNY Albany. She serves on the boards of the Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture\, The Encampment for Citizenship\, the National Ethical Service\, and Ethical Culture Fieldston Schools. She and Glenn Newman joined Brooklyn Ethical in 1982 when they were married there\, and their children Andrew and Emily were raised in\, and are members of\, Brooklyn Ethical. \nRegistration\nYou can register for one\, two\, or all three of the courses. \n>>> Register Here\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
