SUMMARY:Climate\, Politics\, and Corporate Power: A Conversation with Steven Donziger
DESCRIPTION:FREE! Hear human rights attorney Steven Donziger discuss his fight for justice at the intersection of climate\, politics\, and corporate power. \nDonations encouraged to benefit the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund. $500 donors receive preferred seating and access to a pre-show reception with Steven\, Michael\, Ayisha\, and Marty. \nJoin us in conversation with noted human rights attorney Steven Donziger about being targeted with the nation’s first corporate prosecution after helping Amazon communities win a historic $10 billion pollution case against Chevron. Steven is a leading thinker operating at the intersection of climate\, law\, and corporate power. He is also the first US attorney to be jailed by a corporation in retaliation for his human rights work. \nSteven will be joined by actor\, writer\, director\, and activist Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos and White Lotus)\, climate justice advocate and one of Time Magazine’s 2023 Women of the Year Ayisha Siddiqa\, and the legendary civil rights attorney Marty Garbus. Marty has represented Steven for years as Chevron attacked him with 60 law firms\, and he formerly represented Nelson Mandela and Vaclav Havel\, among others. \nFREE! Donations encouraged to support the Donziger-Amazon Defense Fund.\nClick Here to RSVP! \nMore About Steven \nAfter helping Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted him for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. \nThe judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. \nThe private Chevron prosecutor immediately ordered Steven locked up at home with a 24/7 monitoring device on his ankle\, while his trial was delayed for over two years. He ended up spending 993 days in detention and in prison for a misdemeanor offense with a maximum sentence of 180 days; the judge denied him a jury. \nHe is still the only person ever in the US locked up in retaliation for his human rights work. Chevron used 60 law firms and 2\,000 lawyers to attack Steven. He now enjoys the support of 68 Nobel Laureates and more than 150 bar associations and civil society groups around the world and is considered a leading global spokesperson on the issues of human rights\, climate justice\, Indigenous rights\, and the law. \nLearn more about Steven at FreeDonziger.com. Follow him on Twitter at @SDonziger and on Instagram at @stevendonziger.

SUMMARY:Warren Epstein Presents: BORSCHT BELTED & Talkback
DESCRIPTION:At Ethical NYC September 21 & 22: Laughs\, dreams and cold beet soup in the cradle of American comedy! \nCatskills native Warren Epstein’s acclaimed one-man show comes to Ethical! From screaming\, maniacal chefs to the Kings and Queens of Stand-up\, Borsht Belted conjures the sights\, smells\, and snickers in a place that still resonates in our collective funny bone. \nEpstein channels Rodney Dangerfield\, Woody Allen\, Jack Benny\, and other humor pioneers as he recreates his childhood memories from the famous Catskill resort area in New York. His poignant recreation of Jimmy Grecco–“King of the Catskills”–gives us a memorable portrait of a great comic and the incredible era of American Comedy that produced him. \nEpstein brings the Borscht Belt back to life in all it’s schtick-filled glory. You’ll smell the gefilte fish and laugh out a lung as you journey through the quirky bungalow colonies\, smoky cocktail lounges\, and majestic resorts that now exist only in memory. \nThursday\, September 21 performance will be followed by a special talkback. Come share your Borscht Belt stories! \nTickets: $35\nClick here to purchase tickets on Eventbrite! \nMember Discount! Contact mdetermann@nysec.org. \nRead about Borscht Belted at the Colorado Springs Indy! \n“It’s funny about when you grow up in a place that’s unique\,” Epstein says\, “you think everything is entirely normal. So to me\, Milton Berle playing on Saturday a few blocks from my house — that was just another Saturday night.” Milton Berle\, along with comedians like Woody Allen\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Joan Rivers and Marc Maron got their start in the Catskills resorts\, where the Jewish population of New York would go to unwind. The Catskills comedy scene has long since died away\, leaving empty hotels and a fading legacy. Epstein says: “I’m realizing that my memory and my experience\, along with the historic significance of it\, you know\, it called me to do something theatrically about it.” \nChanneling these comedians and his own memories of sneaking into comedy shows and working in famous hotels\, Epstein has created a one-man show to honor both the famous and the forgotten Borscht Belt funnymen who changed the landscape of American comedy. The audience can look forward to meeting Jimmy Grecco\, Epstein’s composite of the comedic personalities he knew and witnessed\, who will narrate a journey through a formative piece of theatrical history. It’s an important story for Epstein to tell\, and not just because it connects to his childhood. It connects to his heritage\, and the shared heritage of many American Jews. \nWatch a Preview:

SUMMARY:'Arbor' World Premiere with Artist in Residence Jody Sperling\, Time Lapse Dance\, and Matthew Burtner
DESCRIPTION:The New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening of stunning\, nature-inspired works by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble. The program features the world premiere of Arbor\, a work dwelling on the nature of trees. The work is the latest outgrowth of the long climate-engaged collaboration between Sperling as choreographer and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. \nThe music will be performed live for this one-night-only event by the composer himself and a string quartet of musicians from The Met Orchestra. \nThe evening also features performances of other notable Sperling-Burtner collaborations. Wind Rose\, which renders changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch\, has been described as “a stunning\, spinning white cloud that both moves and is moved by wind” (Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord Review). Plastic Harvest creates a surreal spectacle of plastic proliferation. Collectively\, the evening’s performances stir the senses and provoke contemplation about our relationship to the natural world. \nThe performance will be followed by an artist talkback. \nFREE – Click to RSVP \nTLD Dancers: Frances Barker\, Anika Hunter\, Maki Kitahara\, Nicole Lemelin\, Jody Sperling\, Sarah Tracy & Rathi Varma \nArbor is made possible in part by an ongoing eco-artist-residency at The New York Society for Ethical Culture and with the generous support of the Peck Stacpoole Foundation.

SUMMARY:Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action with Dana R. Fisher\, Steven Donziger\, Sage Lenier\, and Saad Amer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for author Dana R. Fisher in conversation with Steven Donziger about her new book Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action\, followed by a discussion with youth climate activists Saad Amer and Sage Lenier. \nRSVP\nFREE for Students and Society Members – $10 Public\nGet Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Saving Ourselves\nSaving Ourselves takes a hard look at the growing frequency and severity of climate shocks and makes the case for increased climate activism as the driver of meaningful climate action. \nSaving Ourselves assesses the current state of climate inaction and provides a realistic path forward through the worsening climate crisis. It integrates Fisher’s decades studying climate politics and climate activism\, including her contributions to the most recent report for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)\, to understand how change is coming and what to expect when it finally arrives. \nThe book concentrates on the social actors expected to bring about meaningful climate action—the state\, the business sector\, and civil society—showing how each sector has been ineffective. As a result\, climate activism has become increasingly confrontational. Fisher examines this growing civil disobedience to identify when and how activism is most successful. The book concludes with insights on how people can take power back from deeply entrenched interests\, giving us all our best chance to Save Ourselves. \nAbout Dana R. Fisher\nDana R. Fisher\, PhD. is the Director of the Center for Environment\, Community\, & Equity (CECE) and a Professor in the School of International Service at American University. She has authored over seventy-five research papers and book chapters. Saving Ourselves: From Climate Shocks to Climate Action is her seventh book. Fisher is a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Governance Studies program at The Brookings Institution\, the President of the Eastern Sociological Society\, and the chair-elect of the Political Sociology section of the American Sociological Association. She served as a Contributing Author for Working Group 3 of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Review (IPCC AR6) writing about citizen engagement and civic activism. Her media appearances include ABC\, CNN\, MSNBC\, PBS Newshour\, and various programs on NPR\, BBC\, and CBC. Her words have appeared in the popular media\, including in the Washington Post\, Slate\, TIME Magazine\, Politico\, the Nation\, and the American Prospect. Fisher holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science degree from the Department of Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her undergraduate degree is in East Asian Studies and Environmental Studies from Princeton University. \nAbout Steven Donziger\nAfter helping Amazon communities win a historic $9.5 billion pollution judgment against Chevron\, the company retaliated and prosecuted Steven Donziger for contempt of court in New York after he refused to turn his computer and confidential case file over to his adversary counsel. The federal prosecutor rejected the charges\, which were filed by a pro-corporate judge with financial ties to the company. The judge appointed a Chevron law firm to prosecute Steven in the name of the US government. \nAbout Sage Lenier\nSage Lenier is an activist fighting for an education system that properly prepares Gen Z for a climate-changed future. Recently\, she has been honored by TIME Magazine as one of ten 2023 Next Generation Leaders and wrapped up a Public Voices Fellowship with The Op-Ed Project & The Yale Program on Climate Change Communication (YPCCC). \nAt 19-years-old\, she began teaching her record-breaking program\, Solutions for a Sustainable & Just Future\, which has enrolled 1\,800 students and counting at UC Berkeley. In 2023\, Sustainable & Just Future is now a nonprofit rapidly expanding to bring the vision to a global audience. \nSage’s work covers the circular economy\, decarbonization\, degrowth\, community power\, food systems\, sustainable development\, environmental justice\, and more\, seeking to offer a vision for what a better future could look like. \nHer work has been featured in The New York Times\, The World Economic Forum\, and Teen Vogue and has brought her to speak at conferences\, universities\, and organizations around the world. \nAbout Saad Amer\nSaad Amer is a leading climate activist and environmental justice expert. He is the Founder of the consultancy\, Justice Environment\, and is a consultant to the United Nations. As one of the country’s most prolific voting rights organizers\, he has reached millions of voters and created campaigns featuring the likes of Vice President Al Gore\, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Taylor Swift. He served as an Expert Reviewer for the IPCC AR6 report and helped secure $6.5 billion dollars for the National Parks as Advisor to the National Parks Conservation Association. He has researched the impacts of climate change on the ground in the Indian Himalayas\, co-created Harvard University’s inaugural Sustainability Plan\, and discovered a new hybrid species in French Polynesia. Saad has written for National Geographic\, PBS and the World Bank\, has spoken at the United Nations\, US Department of State and TEDx\, and has been profiled by Vogue\, Nature and the New York Times. He went to Harvard University where he studied Environmental Science and Public Policy and was a Fellow at Yale University’s Public Voices on the Climate Crisis with The OpEd Project. He was named most influential voice in ESG by WWD and honored as Forbes 30 under 30 for social impact.

SUMMARY:The New York Virtuoso Singers: 'Composers Without Borders: The Ties That Bind Us - American\, Iranian\, Ukrainian\, Russian\, & Chinese Composers'
DESCRIPTION:The constitution’s preamble begins with the words “We the people\,” a term which over the centuries has taken on a life of its own. In the context of this concert by The New York Virtuoso Singers\, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us\, we focus on the unity of humankind\, not individual governments\, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. Our concert highlights the unending compositional creativity of humankind despite the complicated interrelationships of the countries represented. \nFrom Iryna Aleksiychuk\, composer of Gloria Patri: Music is a language that is understood by all people of the world. It does not require translation. Music just touches your heart – and you rejoice\, cry\, laugh or feel sad with it. It is wonderful that in our time\, when there is so much grief and violence in the World of People\, we can find refuge\, joy\, and peace in the World of Music. The task of the composer is to bring this light and peace to people\, so that they become better and kinder towards each other. And let the music speak\, but not the guns! \nTickets\nStudents 25 years and younger: $10\nGeneral: $20\nAt the Door: $25 \nClick here to purchase tickets online! \nProgram\nJoel Mandelbaum: Sea Surface Full of Clouds\nChen Yi: Spring Dreams\nAlfred Schnittke: Concerto for Choir\nRamin Amir Arjomand: Salve Regina\nIryna Aleksiychuk: Gloria Patri

Time Out NY noted him as being a “gifted and highly expressive pianist.” Performing regularly across North America and Europe\, he also makes frequent appearances in India\, where the nationally distributed newspaper The Hindu wrote\, “Raj Bhimani is a very sensitive piano player\, with a predilection for lyrical melody accompanied with rhythmic gracefulness.” In New York\, where he resides\, he appears often at The Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center as well as at other venues. \nMr. Bhimani is a champion of new music and has developed a particular expertise in French piano literature. During his time studying in Paris he had the opportunity to meet composer Henri Dutilleux\, who declared him “a great artist who plays with sensitivity and intelligence.” In 2016\, to mark what would have been the composer’s 100th birthday\, Mr. Bhimani gave several performances of his works\, including the Preludes\, which Mr. Bhimani learned from handwritten manuscripts given to him by the composer before these works were published. \nAnother prominent French composer\, Thérèse Brenet\, has written several works especially for Mr. Bhimani. Two of Ms. Brenet’s compositions for Mr. Bhimani can be heard on a CD entitled “To the West Wind\,” on the Delatour label. A disc containing Schubert’s B-flat Sonata and Moments Musicaux was issued by Delatour in the same year. Two more works Ms. Brenet wrote for Mr. Bhimani were issued in 2014 on a disc entitled “Le Visionnaire\,” released by Musik Fabrik\, which has also released recordings of late solo works by Brahms as well as another disk dedicated to solo works by Ravel. All these recordings are available worldwide on numerous platforms. A recording dedicated to late sonatas of Schubert is in preparation\, and Mr. Bhimani is honored to be the first pianist invited to record previously-unpublished works by composer Germaine Tailleferre. This will be a multi-disk project. \nIn addition to solo recitals\, Mr. Bhimani also performs with Syrinx : XXII\, a group formed with musicians from Portugal. The trio performs regularly in the US\, Portugal\, and India\, and has premiered works written especially for them by composers in Portugal and Germany. \nFrequently sought after as a teacher and pedagogue\, Mr. Bhimani is known for guiding students from their first encounters with a piano up to concert level performances. His students have earned numerous prizes and have been heard in performance at Carnegie Hall\, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center\, and other esteemed venues in New York and across the United States. He writes articles on teaching and performance for Serenade Magazine\, is a frequent judge and lecturer on piano pedagogy\, and has served on the board of The Leschetizky Association\, an organization committed to upholding the great pedagogue’s ideals of beautiful tone production and musical integrity. Mr. Bhimani is grateful to his own teachers: John Steele Ritter\, Peter Hewitt\, Nicole Henriot-Schweitzer\, Claude Frank\, and Seymour Bernstein. \nFollow Mr. Bhimani’s activities at his website\, RajBhimani.com\, like his page on Facebook\, follow him on Instagram\, or subscribe to his channel on YouTube. \n(Photo by Jiyang Chen)

SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Benefit: 'Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story' Play w/ Tribute to Judy Collins\, Martin Garbus\, and Mike Osgood
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions for a performance of Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, followed by a special tribute to iconic folk singer Judy Collins\, legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, and former Deputy Chief of the NYPD Mike Osgood. \nVIP reception follows. \nAbout Unlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\nUnlucky Gal: The Jane Doe Story\, is the second part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Martin Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nUnlucky Gal tells the story of Jane Doe\, a twenty-seven year old gay black woman who was raped in Prospect Park in April\, 1994. \nTwo days later\, Mike McAlary of the The New York Daily News began publishing a series of three articles\, based on anonymous police sources\, claiming that Jane Doe was lying about her assault\, although the NYPD did have evidence to the contrary. Devastated\, Jane Doe sued McAlary and the The New York Daily News for libel\, but lost. \nIn 2013 the play Lucky Guy\, based on McAlary\, opened on Broadway. Marty Garbus wrote an editorial for The New York Times pointing out that Jane Doe’s story still had not been told\, and asked\, “Who will tell Jane Does’ story?” \nIn 2017\, Michael Osgood\, Deputy Chief of the NYPD’s Special Victims Unit\, heard a radio interview that mentioned the Jane Doe case and Marty’s op-ed. Osgood read the piece\, and knowing Garbus’ reputation\, reopened the case. In 2018\, DNA evidence revealed Jane Doe’s attacker. \nJane Doe’s fight for justice took nearly two and a half decades. It’s time to tell her story. Unlucky Gal is that story. \nPlay and Tribute Tickets – Purchase on Eventbrite\n$45 – Limited Priority Seating\n$25 – General Admission \nPerformance scheduled for 2:00-4:00pm \nCLICK HERE TO PURCHASE ON EVENTBRITE \nVIP Tickets: Play\, Tribute\, and Reception – Purchase by Phone or Email\n$250\, includes limited priority seating for play.\n(Admission is tax deductible) \nReception is scheduled for 4:00-6:00pm. \nTO PURCHASE: Call 646-366-9340 or email info@causecelebreproductions.org \nProceeds from the event will be used towards the furtherance of the goals of Cause Celebre: to connect theatre\, film and television with compelling causes.

SUMMARY:SOUND~EARTH~MOTION: Jody Sperling/Time Lapse Dance Performance and Gala
DESCRIPTION:Featuring the Time Lapse Dance ensemble with live musical performances by composer Matthew Burtner\, MET Orchestra musicians\, and pianist Jeffrey Middleton. \nSchedule\n7:00-8:00pm – Performance\n8:00-9:30pm – Gala Reception with Artists \nAbout SOUND~EARTH~MOTION\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture presents an evening by Eco-Artist-in-Residence Jody Sperling and her Time Lapse Dance ensemble exploring human entanglement with nature. Featured works highlight the climate-engaged collaboration between choreographer Jody Sperling and environmental composer Matthew Burtner. Arbor dwells on the intimacy of trees. In Wind Rose\, dancers render changing atmospheric patterns palpable to sight\, sound\, and touch. A rare reprisal of Sperling’s masterful solo Clair de lune evokes the shimmer of a moonlit sky. \nAll of these works feature transformative costumes that abstract the essence of human movement into elemental and organic forces\, with the dancers variously appearing to conjure a growing forest or hovering storm clouds. The company’s unique style of movement draws inspiration from and furthers the art form created by dance icon Loie Fuller (1862-1928) a century ago. \n“conjures a timelapse photograph of a flower bud opening to full blossom”\n—Karen Hildebrand\, Fjord \n“[Sperling’s] mission is climate activism through body consciousness”\n—Janet Koplos\, Arts Writer & NYSEC Member \nFollowing the performance\, enjoy a sparkling evening\, from wine to conversation\, with the artists\, fellow Time Lapse Dance fans\, and members of the Ethical NYC community. SUMMARY:Cause Celebre Juneteenth Performance: Last Chance Café
DESCRIPTION:Join Cause Celebre Productions for a performance of Last Chance Café\, part of Cause Celebre’s series exploring seven controversial cases of legendary attorney Marty Garbus\, described by The Guardian as “one of the world’s finest trial lawyers.” \nDon’t miss this incredible evening of drama\, live music\, and the prophetic words of Bob Dylan. The show will be followed by a discussion with legendary lawyer Martin Garbus\, best-selling author\, journalist and social commentator Ellis Cose\, award-winning playwright Susan Charlotte\, and the cast. \nWritten by Susan Charlotte and directed by Antony Marsellis\, the cast includes Nesha Ward\, Larry Pine\, Michael Citriniti\, Greg Mullavey (“Mary Hartman\, Mary Hartman”)\, and Jon Stewart. \nTickets\n$25 – Purchase Tickets on Eventbrite Here \nAbout Last Chance Café\n“Somebody better investigate soon.” Lyrics from a haunting song provide a Greek chorus throughout this deeply compelling play about voter suppression in the Jim Crow South. The time: the 1960’s. The place: Mississippi. The song: “Oxford Town”\, by a young Bob Dylan. \nThe song was written about James Meredith\, in 1962 the first Black person admitted to the University of Mississippi. Racist riots erupted\, and as Dylan wrote\, “Two men died ‘neath the Mississippi moon.” But\, as Dylan said\, “This could have happened any time.” And it did\, even as Jim Crow was falling. \nIn 1965 the American Civil Liberties Union sent a young lawyer\, Marty Garbus\, to Mississippi to represent Henrietta Wright\, a Black woman in her 30s who was arrested in front of the Last Chance Café\, a small store she owned with her husband. The reason\, Wright was told by the white officers holding shotguns\, was a traffic violation: driving through a stop sign. \nThe real reason: with the Voting Rights Act merely twenty days old\, Mrs. Wright had just registered to vote. \nThis fabricated traffic violation led to a stunning violation of a Black woman’s civil rights: Wright was assaulted\, committed to a state mental hospital based on the lies of two complicit doctors\, and then imprisoned. Immediately after her release\, Wright had the courage to file a complaint with the ACLU and bring a federal lawsuit against the two police officers and two doctors. As Garbus landed in Mississippi\, he thought of James Meredith\, with Dylan’s lyrics reverberating in his mind: “Somebody better investigate soon.” \nGarbus warned Wright that her chances of winning her case were next to nothing\, but they agreed she could still make a defiant stand against white supremacy and for voting rights—and that’s exactly what she did. As Garbus said after\, “The ominous Mississippi night which had so often harbored black men\, hanging from their necks\, the burning Cross\, the vicious beating\, had lost some of its threat for Mr. and Mrs. Wright.” \nSixty years later\, with racism still rampant and the right to vote still under attack\, this play could not be more relevant.

SUMMARY:Progressive International: New International Economic Order 50th Anniversary
DESCRIPTION:50 years ago\, the nations of the Third World\, having won their independence from colonialism\, came together to propose a vision for sovereign development and international cooperation in trade\, finance\, and technology — and won a UN Declaration for the Establishment of a New International Economic Order at the General Assembly. \nToday\, we are again in a moment of rapid geopolitical transformation with the end of the unipolar domination of the United States — but we lack a common vision of the multipolar world that is now in formation. How will we confront the crises of climate change\, viral pandemic\, and extreme poverty that threaten billions of lives and livelihoods across the planet? \nOver the past two years\, the Progressive International has convened scholars\, diplomats\, and policymakers in a series of debates and discussions to answer these questions. Their deliberations yielded a clear strategy to ‘assert Southern power’ toward a new global contract on sovereign development\, as set out in the Havana Declaration delivered at the closing ceremony of the inaugural Congress on the New International Economic Order. \n“The Congress recognizes that economic liberation will not be granted\, but must be seized. Our vision can only be realized through the formation of new and alternative institutions to share critical technology\, tackle sovereign debt\, drive development finance\, and face future pandemics together\,” read the Declaration. \nSince then\, the Havana Group has been hard at work to develop that vision into a comprehensive Program of Action on the New International Economic Order: a document with the clarity\, audacity\, and pragmatism to realize sovereign and sustainable development in the twenty-first century. \nNow\, we are planning the launch of that Program of Action in a special ceremony at the New York Society for Ethical Culture — and we would be honored to welcome you there\, alongside distinguished speakers such as Isabella Weber\, Jayati Ghosh\, Adam Tooze\, and Branko Milanovic. \nThe event\, coinciding with the UN General Assembly\, will not only celebrate the legacy of the New International Economic Order on the occasion of its 50th anniversary — but also revive its tradition of robust programmatic thinking to redress the crises of our day. \nSpeakers\nIsabella Weber • Jayati Ghosh • Adam Tooze • Branko Milanović • Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò • and Special Guests from Across the G77 \nRSVP\nFREE! RSVP Here
