SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Andrea Reyes and Deinya Phenix: 'Guided by Community: A Conversation'
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nGuided By Community: A Conversation is an intimate and reflective dialogue between Andrea Reyes and scholar Deinya Phenix\, exploring the complexities of community as both a lived experience and a systemic practice. \nDrawing from Reyes’ latest book\, Guided by Community\, the conversation moves beyond idealized notions of belonging to examine the realities of participation\, power\, care\, and transition. Together\, they explore what it means to build\, sustain\, and step away from community—and why\, even in moments of tension or change\, community remains a critical site for learning\, connection\, and transformation. \nBlending personal narrative with conceptual insight\, this conversation invites audiences to consider their own relationship to community—not as a fixed identity\, but as an evolving practice shaped through reflection\, dialogue\, and shared experience. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nAbout Andrea Reyes\nAndrea Reyes is a community organizer\, educator\, writer\, and doctoral candidate at the Lubin School of Business\, where her research focuses on leadership\, sustainability\, and systems change. She has spent over a decade working across the nonprofit\, fashion\, and education sectors\, including serving as Executive Director of the NYC Fair Trade Coalition. \nHer work explores how personal experience\, cultural systems\, and organizational structures intersect to shape more sustainable futures. Through her Guided By book series\, Andrea brings together theory\, reflection\, and lived experience to invite readers into deeper\, more intentional ways of engaging with power\, materiality\, community\, and future thinking. \nAbout Deinya Phenix\nDeinya Phenix is a multidisciplinary performing artist\, educator\, social science researcher\, and leader who creates spaces for creative expression rooted in ancestral wisdom. Performing since age five\, she has appeared in 900+ events worldwide. She directed Batalá New York from 2016 to 2025\, training over 400 people in Afro‑diasporic percussion and dance. Currently\, she performs with Legacy Women\, Healing Drum Collective\, Manhattan Samba\, and other ensembles. She founded Sister Drumsong\, co‑founded Afoxé Alkebulan Aca Black Family Reunion\, teaches at Cumbe\, and serves on Duye Moves’ board. SUMMARY:'Decarbonization Districts: Accelerating Achievement of Clean Energy Goals with District Energy Systems' with Linnea Paton
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by 350NYC\, ThirdAct NYC\, and Ethical NYC! \nEver wonder what’s up with those clouds of steam that occasionally rise up from under NYC’s streets and sidewalks? Join us for a presentation by Linnea Paton\, head of long-range planning for ConEd’s district steam system\, the largest in North America. She’ll talk about plans to use industrial heat pumps and electric thermal energy storage to charge the system\, which would result in huge reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. \nLinnea Paton specializes in decarbonization strategy within the energy sector\, with expertise in district energy systems and building energy efficiency. She focuses the development of pathways for large-scale greenhouse gas reduction. She has received multiple industry recognitions\, including awards from the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) and the International District Energy Association for her contributions to energy efficiency and sustainable infrastructure. \nLinnea’s presentation will be followed by open discussion about our two organizations and our efforts to protect the climate and counter authoritarianism. \n>>> Register Here

SUMMARY:Sunday Platform with Kate Cohen: The Pope\, the President\, and the Problem of Moral Authority
DESCRIPTION:Free in-person and online! \nWouldn’t it be nice if we had a moral authority to whom we could appeal when we weren’t sure whether something was right or wrong? Or to back us up when we were? In these catastrophic/ridiculous times\, you don’t have to be Catholic to take satisfaction in the Pope’s recent public support of simple decency. But even when the Pope says something self-evidently right\, we have to remind ourselves that morality doesn’t inhere in any one person or text. And that\, perhaps\, our collective desire for such an external authority has helped create the mess we’re in. \nCommunity lunch follows\, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program. \nJoin Online\n>>>RSVP on Zoom Here \nAbout Kate Cohen\nKate Cohen is a former Washington Post contributing columnist and the author of We of Little Faith: Why I Stopped Pretending to Believe (And Maybe You Should Too)\, which chronicles her journey to outspoken atheism and examines whether nonbelievers can still have the benefits religion promises. For this work and for her columns inspecting American deference to religion\, the Freedom from Religion Foundation honored her with its 2023 “Freethought Heroine” award. She now writes an independent column called Scratch\, about creating — instead of buying or simply accepting — the stuff\, nature\, and purpose of our lives. Follow her on Bluesky and Instagram. \nMonthly Collection\nThe New York Society for Ethical Culture \nAbout Sunday Platform\nSunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event.
