Sunday Platform with Jean Rohe: Singing Together Toward a More Perfect Union

Sun October 18 | 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
Free

Free in-person and online!

Award-winning songwriter and performer Jean Rohe tells the story of her song “National Anthem: Arise! Arise!” —its origins and the journeys it has taken since she penned it in 2010. Performed many hundreds of times by fellow artists, choirs, and music-makers around the campfire, the song’s roots reach deep into the fertile soil of movement music that came before her, and the tradition of group singing that has fortified so many who have struggled for justice in dark times.

Community lunch follows, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program.

About Jean Rohe

Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the interior lives of her narrators as with the wider world around them. Her incisive, literary style is the product of years of experimentation and practice, learning on her feet as a side-person and bandleader in New York’s wide-ranging music communities. Born into a family of living room music-makers, storytellers, and raconteurs, Jean’s approach to her craft assumes that music is a community act, woven into the social life of family and friends. She has won over folkies, jazz heads, theater geeks, bookworms, and would-be noise complainants to her singular take on the human condition. No Depression says, “Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous.” Visit her website, jeanrohe.com, and follow her on Instagram @jeanrohe

About Sunday Platform

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
