Ethical Adventures Easy Walkers – Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Gardens: Bamboo Forest and Chinese Scholar’s Garden

September 9, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

This event was previously scheduled for September 7.

Snug Harbor opened 1833 as a sailors’ retirement home. After the home moved away in 1976, it became the Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden, a beautiful space used by various local arts organizations.

There are 26 buildings in a variety of 19th century architectural styles (Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate, and Victorian) in this 83-acre park on Staten Island’s north shore. We’ll walk through the tall bamboo forest and explore the Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

Lunch will follow at the charming, outdoor Harbor Eats in the park. We can explore some of the other sights on this large botanical garden before heading home. We hope to see you for this fascinating adventure!

Please RSVP to Bob (rbumcrot65@gmail.com) and Howard (hrose@nysec.org) and let them know if you plan to meet at the Society meeting house or the 1 Train exit at South Ferry.

Details:

We’ll meet at Ethical at 9:30, take the #1 train to South Ferry (where we may meet other walkers), and ride the ferry to Staten Island, during which we’ll learn about the history of Snug Harbor. Arriving at Staten Island, we’ll take a short bus ride to Snug Harbor. (Bikers can easily pedal from the ferry landing.) Admission is $5.
