Evening with The League of Women Voters – Dorchen Leidholdt: “Domestic Violence: What Is It and What is Being Done to Protect Victims?”

March 10, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Legal Center for Battered Women’s Legal Services at the Sanctuary for Families in New York City is the largest legal services program for domestic violence victims in the country. The Center has successfully advocated for laws requiring New York State courts to consider evidence of domestic violence in custody and visitation cases, adding the crimes of stalking and strangulation to the NYS penal code, and enabling domestic violence victims in same sex relationships to pursue civil protective orders.

DORCHEN LEIDHOLDT teaches Domestic Violence and the Law at Columbia University School of Law and has taught Criminal Procedure at City University School of Law. She began her legal career as a defense attorney for the Legal Aid Society. Dorchen is a cofounder and member of the Board of Directors of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (DATW). She received, among others, the U.N. Capitol Association Human Rights Award, the NYC Bar Association’s Legal Services Award, and the NYU School of Law Public Interest Law Foundation Award for “outstanding contributions in public interest law.”
