Great Literature Discussion: ‘The Cave’ by José Saramago (Online)

April 20, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The struggle of the individual against bureaucracy and anonymity is one of the great subjects of modern literature, and Saramago is often matched with Kafka as one of its premier exponents. But this comparison doesn’t convey the warmth and human dimension of many of his novels. Those qualities are particularly evident in this brilliant allegory, which links the sterility of modern life to the parable of Plato’s cave.

It took Saramago’s consummate skills to convert this ancient parable into a novel with impact, hope and charm.
