Great Literature Discussion Group – Awaiting Trespass: A Passion by Linda Ty-Casper

March 4, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Ty-Casper recounts the breaching of the walls around the private lives of an affluent Filipino family responding to the reality of suffering and injustice in their native land — using the surreal as well as the poetic to satirize and criticize contemporary Philippine society.

The death of family patriarch Don Severino Gil brings together the entire Gil clan. Through the eyes of Gil’s favorite niece, Telly, we see the family struggle to maintain a facade of order and decorum amid the decay of martial law. She experiences a kind of rebirth, resolving as a writer to struggle against the injustice of her nation.

Literary works will be discussed based on what can be found in the text in order to enrich each other’s interpretation of the novel/novella. All are welcome to join and any edition or translation of the book under discussion can be used.

Read the novella in advance and be prepared to discuss the aspects of interest to you by referring to specific related text and reading it to the group. Moderated by Ethical NYC member Gunther Tielemans.
