Speaking of Science with Laura McKenna: ‘The Autism Learning Curve: The Lifelong Challenges of Raising a Child with Autism’ (Online)

Free online!
Our monthly online science series continues with autism consultant Laura McKenna.
Laura McKenna, Ph.D., is a consultant who works with families at different stages of their children’s lives—from understanding a new diagnosis and finding appropriate therapies to navigating schools, college, government benefits, and the transition to adulthood.
One of the things she’s learned from this work is that parents face a continual learning curve. Just when they become experts at one system, their child enters a new stage of life, and they have to master an entirely new set of professionals, terminology, bureaucracies, and decisions. Her talk will look at that lifelong process, the enormous amount of expertise we expect parents to acquire along the way, and what we could do as a society to make these systems easier to navigate.
Her goal is to raise awareness about these challenges so that, eventually, families won’t need people like her to help them navigate them. In other words, she’d be delighted to put myself out of a job.
