Sunday Platform with Diane Debrovner: ‘Seeing One Another: Inspiring Curiosity and Empathy Through Children’s Books’

Free in-person and online!
Diane Debrovner shares the story behind her co-authored middle grade novel, Roxie In Color, about a 12-year-old who wants to be known as more than “the girl with blind parents.” Inspired by an article in Parents Magazine, the book explores misconceptions about people who are blind, and the discrimination they still face. Many families live in fear of Child Protective Services because their ability to keep their children safe is questioned. This talk explores hidden biases about disability, how fiction can provide both windows and mirrors for readers, and what people of all ages can learn from reading children’s books.
Community lunch follows, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program.

About Sunday Platform
Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest. Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
