AEU National Platform – Rep. Jamie Raskin: “How the Congressional Freethought Caucus is Fighting to Restore the Intellectual Foundations of American Democracy” (Online)

January 31 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Join Ethical Societies nationwide as the American Ethical Union hosts “Replacing Magical Thinking with Rational Discourse: How the Congressional Freethought Caucus is Fighting to Restore the Intellectual Foundations of American Democracy” with Congressman Jamie Raskin! The platform will be shared by representatives from all twenty-five national Ethical Societies and will feature music from the Washington Ethical Society Chorus, Jaque DuPree and Barry Kornhauser, with presiders Vandra Thorburn, Elaine Durbach and Lyn Cox.

Jamie Raskin is a Member of the United States House of Representatives (D-MD), a professor of constitutional law and an author. He was the sponsor of the Resolution adopted overwhelmingly by the House (386-3) in the first week of December in 2020 calling for release of all religious prisoners on earth and for repeal of all blasphemy, apostasy and heresy laws. He was a key actor in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump and brought the House Judiciary Committee Impeachment Resolution before the House Rules Committee. He defends the House action: “The fact that the Republican senators behaved like members of a religious cult does not render our decision a foolish one. We stood up for the Constitution.”

Rep. Raskin is the co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus which he co-founded with Rep. Jared Huffman (D-CA). “My hope for the CFC,” explains Rep Huffman, “is to be identified … as a counterweight to those pushing the country toward theocracy. Thankfully, my co-founder Jamie Raskin sees it the same way and brings remarkable legal expertise, credibility, a good sense of humor and boundless energy to our efforts.”

On December 7th, Congressman Jamie Raskin’s (MD-08) bipartisan House Resolution 512, calling for the global repeal of blasphemy, heresy, and apostasy laws, passed the House of Representatives by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 386-3. The Resolution also calls for the immediate release of religious prisoners of conscience worldwide. As more than 80 countries use blasphemy laws to persecute and imprison religious minorities and dissenters, the House asserted the essential importance of freedom of religion and liberty of conscience globally.

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
