Sunday Platform – Nori Rost: The Ethics of Imagination (Online)

January 2, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

Notice: this week’s Sunday Platform will be online only.

In her essay To Love the Marigold, in the book, The Impossible Will Take a Little While: A Citizen’s Guide to Hope in a Time of Fear, edited by Paul Loeb, Susan Griffin writes,

Like artistic and literary movements, social movements are driven by imagination. I am not speaking here only of the songs and poems and paintings that have always been part of movements for political and social change, but of the movements themselves, their political ideas and forms of protest. Every important social movement reconfigures the world in the imagination. What was obscure comes forward, lies are revealed, memory shaken, new delineations drawn over the old maps: it is from this new way of seeing the present that hope for the future emerges…No one can stop us from imagining another kind of future, one which departs from the terrible cataclysm of violent conflict, of hateful divisions, poverty and suffering. Let us begin to imagine the worlds we would like to inhabit, the long lives we will share, and the many futures in our hands.

Join us on this first Platform of 2022 as Dr. Rost explores the power of our imagination in creating a future filled with hope.

Shared Charity: Students for Justice

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
