Kevon Cameron: The Need for Secular Communities of Color

February 26, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

In-person and online!

My presentation centers around the need for secular communities or color. It will examine in depth the general state of religiosity within the black community especially. I’ll also be touching on the push back these secular groups receive from both “more traditional” atheist organizations and from the religious people of color.

Kevon Cameron is an atheist, humanist, activist, and organizer. Originally born in Jamaica, his family moved to New York when he was barely 4 years old. Though he was raised by traditional, “old school” parents who became more religious over time, he was never convinced that there is a higher power.

For 4 and a half years he was the lead organizer for Black Nonbelievers of NYC. Recently he and several other former organizers have combined their efforts to create The Black Secular Collective. In addition, he is also a co-organizer for the Gotham Atheists meetup group and sits on the board of the Secular Humanist Society of NYC.

Notice: Only fully-vaccinated individuals are invited to attend in-person at this time. Proof of vaccination, photo ID, and mask are required.

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
