Akeem Browder: The Kalief Browder Story

March 26, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

In-person and online! If you’re planning to attend in-person, please RSVP on Eventbrite!

The story of Kalief Browder will be discussed with the help of videos created by the Kalief Browder Foundation. Akeem Browder will discuss the effects of Solitary confinement and incarceration in NYC at Rikers Island, and the conditions of Kalief’s incarceration comparative to the young boy (Kalief) prior to his arrest and wrongful incarceration. Akeem will discuss the work done in Kalief’s legacy i.e. the federal law w/Pres. Obama the CJR laws passed in Kaliefs name and the continued work of the KBF and how people can be involved.

20 people have died in New York City Jails this year and Rikers is the deadliest it’s been in 25 years. The fight to keep Rikers Island open when my brother suffered a wrong incarceration and inevitable death sentence is unscrupulous. This will undoubtedly lead to more Black, brown, and low-income New Yorkers being incarcerated at Rikers. This is unacceptable! My family was promised Rikers would be shutdown and I wont stop fighting until we get just that! -Akeem Browder

If you’re planning to attend in-person, please RSVP on Eventbrite!

Akeem ran for Mayor of NYC in 2017 to show his commitment to narrative change, social justice and equity for all. Currently he is finishing a postgraduate degree in Sociology.
