Sandra Goldmark: ‘On Circularity, Reciprocity, and Spatulas: Lessons From the Humble Objects All Around Us’

April 23, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm

In-person and online!

Sandra Goldmark, of Barnard College and the Columbia Climate School, explores how the everyday objects in our homes connect us to each other, and to the global system of production and consumption.

Drawing from her book, Fixation: How to Have Stuff without Breaking the Planet, and ranging from her experiences backstage in the theatre to repairing thousands of objects in her pop-up repair shops, Goldmark helps us see our “stuff” with fresh eyes and makes a compelling case for a less wasteful and more equitable way forward.

Sandra Goldmark is Senior Assistant Dean for Interdisciplinary Engagement at the Columbia Climate School, and Director of Sustainability and Climate Action and Associate Professor of Professional Practice at Barnard College. From 2013-2019, Sandra founded and operated Fixup, a social enterprise repair service dedicated to healthy and circular patterns of consumption. Sandra is a co-creator of the Sustainable Production Toolkit, a free climate action and sustainability resource for performing arts organizations, and serves on the Board of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, MSNBC, the BBC, The Sunday Times of London, The Daily News,, and many more. A graduate of Harvard College and Yale University, Sandra is the author of Fixation: How to Have Stuff without Breaking the Planet. Visit her website at

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
