Sunday Platform with Curt Collier: How To Love a Country That Disappoints Us

Free in-person and online!
At a moment when many Americans feel exhausted by politics, disillusioned by the failures of our institutions, and alarmed by President Trump’s ongoing attacks on democratic norms and civic unity, this Memorial Day reflection asks a deeper question: what does patriotism mean when democracy itself feels wounded? As the Supreme Court retreats from long-standing democratic safeguards and public life grows increasingly cynical and divided, many citizens struggle not simply with politics, but with grief for the country itself.
This talk explores how we can remain faithful to the unfinished democratic experiment — not through blind nationalism or partisan outrage, but through the difficult ethical work of citizenship, civic courage, and repairing what is broken rather than surrendering it to fear, apathy, or authoritarianism.
Community lunch follows, free for first-time guests and families participating in the Young Ethical Explorers Program.

About Sunday Platform
Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest. Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
