US-based businesses have been the greatest beneficiaries of the post-World War II international order, rooted in human rights and the rule of law. Businesses thrive in stable, democratic societies, with strong institutions – independent courts, a free press, and a vibrant civil society. While many of these core democratic safeguards are being challenged, business leaders have been reluctant to stand up. As the November mid-term elections loom on the horizon, Professor Posner will discuss the risks to fair elections and what business leaders can and should be doing to support our democracy.

About Michael H. Posner

Michael Posner is the Director of the NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights, the first human rights center at a business school. He also is the Jerome Kohlberg Professor of Ethics and Finance. From September 2009 until March 2013, he served in the Obama Administration as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. State Department. Before going into government, he was the Executive Director and then President of Human Rights First, a U.S.-based human rights advocacy organization. He is the author of Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights.

About Sunday Platform

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Humanist philosophy. Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
