Explore our list of actions you can take this month to make our city, state, country, and planet a better place!

The motto of The New York Society for Ethical Culture is Deed Above Creed, something we’ve worked to live up to with our rich tradition of activism since 1876.

In that spirit, in 2021 and beyond the Society will be sending out Calls to Action, featuring important causes selected by our member committees and allies, because your voice and your deeds matter!

Join a Phonebank and Textbank to Help the For The People Act Pass the Senate

Ethical Action Committee

Our friends at Common Cause are calling and texting voters in targeted states and asking them to demand their Senators support the For the People Act (S1) and the elimination of the filibuster:

Every Day at 6:00pm ET: Common Cause For the People Act Phone Banks will be calling voters in these states and connecting them to their Senators.

Every Wednesday and Saturday at 12:00pm ET: Common Cause For the People Act Text Banks are sending thousands of texts to people in key states to ask them to make calls in support of the For the People Act.

Gas Free NYC: Tell City Council to Support Bill Intro 2317

Environmental Stewardship Committee

Our friends at We ACT, NY Communities for Change, and others worked together this month to introduce a new bill before the NYC City Council that would phase out the use of natural gas in new construction. This bill’s approach is a little different than other efforts going on around the country to ban gas hookups in new buildings. You can read about the design and the legal reasons for it in this post from Amy Turner at Columbia’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law.

Do your part to help get it passed! Contact your City Council member and ask them to support Intro 2317. While you are at it, feel free to give Speaker Corey Johnson’s office a call at 888-431-7599 and ask him to sponsor the bill as well!

Join activists from Beyond Plastics and the Fourth Universalist Society for an in-person rally to send an S.O.S. to Senator Schumer to address plastic pollution, starting by passing the new National Bottle Bill.

To join the rally outside Senator Schumer’s office, please sign-up here: https://actionnetwork.org/events/sos-senator-schumer

Please bring a bring a “message in a bottle” for Senator Schumer and some signs with BIG letters!

Do Your Part to Fight Anti-Asian Violence and Hate Crimes

Sunday Platform Inspired

At our July 11 Sunday Platform, long-time activist and attorney Glenn Magpantay spoke about the issues facing Asian Americans, including the rash of hate crimes committed against them over the past year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you witness anti-Asian discrimination or hate crimes, Glenn recommended reporting it to two organizations: Communities Against Hate and Stop AAPI Hate.
