The motto of The New York Society for Ethical Culture is Deed Above Creed, something we’ve worked to live up to with our rich tradition of activism since 1876.
In that spirit, in 2021 and beyond the Society will be sending out Calls to Action, featuring important causes selected by our member committees and allies, because your voice and your deeds matter!
Contact Senate Offices to Support the For the People Act (S1) and Report What They Say
Common Cause continues to ask that everyone contact their senators and ask that they support the For the People Act (S1) and the elimination of the filibuster.
Importantly, once you’ve contacted your senators’ offices, Common Cause asks that you please log and describe your call using this short online form. Your report will help Common Cause plan and improve S1 advocacy efforts this fall.
Stop the Money Pipeline Coalition: Petition to Defund Climate Chaos
From our friends at 350NYC: Sign the Deadline Glasgow petition now and demand that the financial industry and Biden Administration take transformational climate finance action by November 1st. Our goal is to gather hundreds of thousands of signatures on the petition and to deliver it to hundreds of insurance offices, bank branches, asset manager and pension fund offices, and federal offices in September.
The Next Big Step to a Green New Deal for NY: Demand City Council Support #GasFreeNYC
Via New York Communities for Change: Now is the time to make sure all new buildings in NYC are built green, rather than locking in decades of more carbon pollution. Sign up now to contact your City Council member and demand they pass Intro Bill 2317 and fight for a #GasFreeNYC. It will make an enormous difference in the fight to save our collective future.
August 22: Join Faithful Democracy’s Interfaith Webinar for Voting Rights
On August 28, the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s historic March on Washington, advocates will gather across the country to demand that elected officials denounce voter suppression and ensure fair, easy access to the vote for all.
In preparation, on August 22 at 3:00pm the National Coalition for Jewish Women and the Faithful Democracy coalition will host an online interfaith webinar to kick-off voting rights activities across the country and inform people about how they can get involved. Keep an eye out for actions in NYC!
Give to the Society’s Diaper Drive
Through August and into the fall, the Society is collecting money to provide diapers for needy families, an expensive necessity that is not covered by support programs, including SNAP.
Along with online monetary donations, the public is also invited to order diapers and have them shipped directly to the Society. To learn more and give, please visit our website.
