Meet Steven, teacher of government, economics and sociology at Park East High School in East Harlem and member of the New York Society for Ethical Culture.
Steven realized he was interested in a career in education after participating in the Multi-Racial Unity Living Experience program at Michigan State University and teaching English in China for a year, where he realized that teaching provided the perfect opportunity to discuss and investigate social justice issues.
It wasn’t until last January that Steven found Ethical NYC. While he was only looking to attend one event, the intellectual conversation and “put theory to practice” approach of Ethical NYC sparked his interest. Seeing how attending Ethical NYC events benefited him, Steven began bringing his students to Ethics in Action events last spring. This not only helped his students get involved with their larger community but gave them an opportunity to investigate truth for themselves outside the classroom.
