Sunday Platform – Kristal Zook: “The Girl in the Yellow Poncho” (Online)

November 1, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

This talk is from a memoir-in-progress. It sheds light on the increasingly relevant topic of growing up multiracial in America. The Girl in the Yellow Poncho is the story of a black and white American child growing up in Los Angeles and coming of age in the 1980s and 1990s. As a young woman finding her way among mostly white students at UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz, she is a biracial black feminist longing for the white father who abandoned her, while grappling with the worldviews of her mother and grandmother—and later, struggling to find her place as a light-skinned journalist covering controversial issues involving racial injustice and women.

Kristal Brent Zook, Ph.D. is an author, award-winning journalist, and professor of journalism at Hofstra University on Long Island. She is a former contributing writer for the Washington Post and Essence magazine and has written for dozens of print and broadcast outlets over the past 25 years, including the New York Times Sunday Magazine, NPR, the Nation, the Guardian, and most recently, The New Yorker. Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
