Judith Enck: Plastics or Planet? Moving Beyond Plastics

By July 19, 2020September 25th, 2020No Comments

Scientists tell us that in the next decade, for every 3 pounds of fish in the ocean there will be one pound of plastic. Learn how plastic pollution is threatening our environment, our health and what you can do about it. Judith Enck will address impacts of plastics from production, to use and disposal. She will put a laser- focus on why plastics is an environmental justice issue, the nexus with climate change and plastic production and why we can’t recycle our way out of the problem. There will also be a sliver of good news.

Judith Enck is a seasoned environmental advocate who began her career with NYPIRG and Environmental Advocates of NY. She served as Deputy Secretary for the Environment in the NY Governor’s Office and was appointed by President Obama to be the EPA Regional Administrator. She is a Visiting Professor at Bennington College and the founder and President of Beyond Plastics. Ms. Enck is a weekly panelist on the WAMC (NPR) Roundtable program in Albany and lives in upstate New York. She loves twitter and urges you to live tweet her talk. Follow her at @Enckj and @PlasticsBeyond.

Sunday Platform is our most important and long-standing community event. These gatherings educate, stimulate personal growth, inspire reflection and action, and strengthen our community. Sunday meetings usually begin with music, followed by greetings and a talk given by a Society Leader, member, or guest.  Platforms cover a variety of topics that reflect current events, pressing social issues, and Ethical Culture philosophy. A collection basket is passed and money is shared between the Society and a charity selected for that day.  While contributions are always appreciated, Sunday meetings are free and open to the public.  Each Sunday meeting is followed by a luncheon and social hour.
