Obsessed with Light, a feature documentary created by Sabine Krayenbühl and Zeva Oelbaum, tells the remarkable story of Loïe Fuller, a visionary artist and technological trailblazer who disrupted the prevailing notions of dance and re-imagined the perceived limits of the human body.
Loïe Fuller’s Serpentine Dance made her an overnight sensation in Paris, but she actually debuted her iconic work in the U.S. The Serpentine Dance was received by enthusiastic audiences in New York at the New York Casino in 1892.
The work of the Society’s own artist-in-residence, dancer and choreographer Jody Sperling of Time Lapse Dance, is deeply inspired by Fuller. The film interweaves scenes of Jody creating a new work with Time Lapse Dance, archival footage, and interviews with other contemporary artists speaking about Loie’s legacy.
Multiple screenings of Obsessed with Light are being held from December 6-12, and Jody will be participating in talkbacks at two upcoming screenings this weekend!
