The Social Service Board sponsors soccer teams for teenagers 14 to 16 years old: a boys’ team and a girls’ team. The mission is to keep these teenagers off the streets while teaching them leadership, values, and good sportsmanship. Most of the kids involved are from underprivileged families that have immigrated from Latin-American countries. The kids are mostly beginners and practice twice a week after school, developing their soccer skills as well as the discipline required in playing a sport. In addition, they spend one day a week after school involved in leadership development and educational activities.
On Saturdays, they participate in the LA Liga Soccer League. From June to October they play outdoors. From November to March they playindoors.
SSB Member Henry Bunch is responsible for the Queens Soccer Foundation Team program.
