Lunch with the League of Women Voters: ‘Civics Education: The Building Blocks of Democracy’

Civics education has been languishing for years. A recent Annenberg Public Policy survey found that only 26 percent of Americans can name all three branches of government. How does New York City ensure the next generation learns about the role and importance of government in their lives. Our speakers will discuss some recent actions that NYC is taking to reintroduce civics education and engagement.
Speakers:
Jenna Ryall, Director of Civics for All at the New York City Department of Education
Jenna Ryall co-designed the Civics for All initiative, a comprehensive K–12 civic education program available to all NYCDOE schools. Ms. Ryall holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Fordham University and a Master’s degree and Post-Master’s Certificate from Stony Brook University.
Sanda Balaban, Co-Founder/Director, YVote and Next Generation Politics
Sanda Balaban has held leadership roles in education and youth development for over 25 years. Her experience includes the New York City Department of Education, education philanthropy at the Ford Foundation and the Goldman Sachs Foundation as well as nonprofits She is a magna cum laude graduate of Swarthmore College and Harvard Graduate School of Education.
