Statement on the Overturning of Roe v. Wade: The Work Ahead

By June 24, 2022No Comments

Dear members and friends of Ethical NYC,

I’m sure by now you’ve heard the distressing news about the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. This decision sets a dangerous precedent for all of our civil liberties and puts the lives of millions of people immediately at risk.

I want to assure you that we have already sprung into action here. I’ve called a meeting of interfaith leaders at Ethical NYC this Tuesday where we will discuss ways we can band together to support those seeking abortion as well as using our collective voice to express our outrage at this unjust decision.

Now is not the time to despair; now is the time to get righteously angry and use every means at our disposal to fight back.

This means working with Reclaim Our Vote to send postcards to states where elections between pro-choice and anti-women candidates hang in the balance. This means volunteering a spare room, if you have one, for a person coming from out of state to access abortion. This means volunteering to be an escort for women going to a clinic to access abortion.

Not only are we working to create a structure of support and resources locally, I have also reached out to all Ethical Societies (and Unitarian Universalist churches) to create an Ethical Choices Network that will assist women in states where abortion will become severely restricted or outright illegal.

This is a dire time, but we here at Ethical are more than equipped to face with courage the work ahead of us. Thank you in advance for your support, your time, and your resources.

I am proud to serve alongside you in these harrowing times.
